Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The National League's Philadelphia Phillies franchise began it all in 1883. Which team name did they use in their inaugural season?

Answer: Quakers

The franchise was the Quakers from 1883-1889. The Phillies name came in 1890 and still did not win a National League crown until 1915. Unfortunately, they lost that World Series to the Boston Red Sox four games to one. Their first World Series title would not be until 1980 when they defeated the Kansas City Royals four games to two.
2. Which of these Major League franchises came first?

Answer: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Angels began their franchise as an expansion team in 1961 under the helm of manager Bill Rigney. They first played at Wrigley Field in California until they shared Dodger Stadium before moving to their new stadium. They changed their name to the California Angels from 1965-1977, then went with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 1978.

The franchise saw their first World Series and resulted in a crown in 2002 against the San Francisco Giants.
3. The Atlanta Braves franchise began in the National League in 1876 and had many team names throughout the years. How many World Series did the franchise win in the entire 20th Century?

Answer: 3

Although being a powerhouse team in the 1990s and going to five World Series, the franchise won only one, in 1995. Their first was in 1914 as the Boston Braves and their second in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves.
4. The Baltimore Orioles franchise was derived from which American League team, who saw their inaugural season in 1901?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

The franchise began with the new American League in 1901. They were so bad that they moved to St. Louis to become the Browns the following season. The Browns weren't much better as appearing in only one World Series in their 50+ season history. In 1944 they met their crosstown rival St. Louis Cardinals.

The Browns lost their only World Series four games to two. The franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954.
5. The Texas Rangers began their franchise with which team name?

Answer: Washington Senators

The original American League Washington Senators began their endeavors in 1901. They moved to and changed their name to the Minnesota Twins in late 1960. A new Washington Senator franchise evolved in 1961 to play in the American League until 1971. That team moved to become the Texas Rangers.
6. Which of these National League team franchises is the oldest?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Cardinals began their franchise in 1882 in the American Association as the St. Louis Brown Stockings. The Giants franchise began as the New York Gothams in 1883. The Dodgers began it all in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics. It was the Chicago Cubs who were one of the initial teams in the National League when it began in 1876 and named the Chicago White Stockings.

The team was led by player-manager-pitcher Al Spalding who went 47-12 to help secure the first-ever National League title.
7. Which National League team set a Major League record by winning 26 consecutive games in 1916, with the help of pitcher Christy Mathewson?

Answer: New York Giants

With a streak of playing 26 straight home games, the Giants also set a record for most consecutive home game victories. Earlier in the season those same Giants had a streak of 17 wins, and ironically, the last of the game streak resulted in Christy Mathewson's final career shutout. The Giants would still finish in fourth place, seven games behind the NL Champion Brooklyn Robins.
8. Which was the first National League team in history to win 100 games in a season?

Answer: Boston Beaneaters

The Beaneaters franchise eventually became the Atlanta Braves. In 1892, the Beaneaters went 102-48 and won the league title over the Cleveland Spiders. They would also become the second team to top the 100-win mark in 1898. The following season in 1899, the Brooklyn Superbas (later Dodgers) would also join the 100 club with 101 wins.
9. The New York Mets began as an expansion team in 1962. They just couldn't seem to get it going as they lost 100+ games in their first four seasons. Who replaced them as the worst team in baseball in 1966, by losing 103 games?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Dodgers and Orioles met each other in the World Series. Strangely enough, the 1966 Cubs had four pretty big guns with Ernie Banks, Randy Hundley, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams. Although they finished sixth in the league with the most runs, they had no pitching. Ken Holtzman was their only pitcher to win in double figures with 11 but lost 16 in the process.

Their pitching staff ranked last in the league in almost every major category. Five times in the 20th Century the Cubs did win 100+ games in a season, the fifth being in 1935.
10. The Federal League tried to form and become the third major baseball league in 1914. All their franchises stuck it out for two seasons but the league closed it doors after the 1915 season. How many teams competed and were dedicated to make it work?

Answer: 8

The league started its contract talks in late 1912 and not only tried to convince some Major Leaguers to join them, but they had some pretty big names jump ship and play in the Federal League. The Federal League teams were represented by Baltimore, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Chicago, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.

The first championship was won by the Indianapolis Hoosiers, then the franchise moved and became the Newark Pepper in 1915. The Chicago Whales won the 1915 title.
