Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the second year running in 2006, West Coast played which team in the Grand Final?

Answer: Sydney

The Eagles and Sydney had recently created a fantastic rivalry with their last 5 games being decided by less than a goal. These games include 4 finals and 2 Grand Finals between 2005 and 2006. In 2005, the Grand Final was decided by 4 points with Sydney winning, but the result was reversed in 2006 with the Eagles scraping home by a single point.
2. The final score of 85-84 in 2006 made the game one of the very few Grand Finals to be decided by a point. It was also the same score as when the two teams met last. What game did they meet in before the Grand Final?

Answer: Qualifying Final

The Qualifying Final was played at Subiaco, as it was in 2005, but this time the Swans prevailed by a single point. However, the Eagles then went on to beat the Swans in the Grand Final, the opposite to what had happened the year before.
3. In 2006, the Norm Smith Medal for the best player in the match was won by a West Coast player for the second year running. Who was the winner?

Answer: Andrew Embley

Chris Judd in 2005 won the Norm Smith in a losing side, which was unusual, but this time the winner came from the premiership team. Embley had a fantastic Grand Final and took some match saving marks in defence late in the game. He also kicked two important goals.
4. Steven Armstrong of the West Coast Eagles started his career playing for Melbourne?

Answer: True

Armstrong was injured in the 2002 Bali bombings, and was de-listed from the Demons at the end of 2005. He was picked up by the Eagles and put on the rookie list, making his debut for the club in Round 13, and played 10 games in 2006 including the Grand Final.
5. Key forward Quinten Lynch had a much improved season in 2006. How many goals did he kick?

Answer: 65

Lynch had been much maligned in 2005 for his inability to hold on to simple chest marks, but he improved in leaps and bounds the following year. He had a neat average of three goals per game after a slow start up to Round 7, and kicked three in the Grand Final.
6. Which Eagles player provided a memorable smother and set up a goal in the final quarter?

Answer: Daniel Chick

Chick's moment of brilliance in the final quarter will be talked about for a long time. The ball was in the Eagles forward line, and Chick tackled Adam Schneider strongly, but he got the handball away.
As Ryan O'Keefe went for the quick clearance, Chick jumped forward and smothered the ball with his body, then recovered the bouncing ball, handballed to the run of Hunter, and to top it all off laid a strong shepherd to clear a path towards goal.
7. What medal was John Worsfold presented with on Grand Final day?

Answer: Jock McHale Medal

The Jock McHale medal is named after the greatest coach of all-time, who led Collingwood to 8 premierships in a very successful era for the club. The Medal is presented to the coach of the premiership side each year, and in 2006, the great coach Allan Jeans presented it to Worsfold.
8. Chris Judd had the most disposals for the game?

Answer: True

He had the most disposals with 28, and again played a fantastic finals match, which is what we have come to expect from this young champion. At only 23, he had already captained a premiership side, won the Brownlow, the AFLPA MVP, two All-Australian Guernseys and the Norm Smith Medal.
9. How many goals did Barry Hall, Sydney's co-captain and main forward, kick in the Grand Final?

Answer: 0

He had a horrible game, and was brilliantly held by All-Australian fullback Darren Glass. For weeks afterwards, Hall refused to talk to the media about the game and made critical comments about them jumping on and off the bandwagon.
10. The 2006 AFL Premiership took the Eagles to how many premierships since they entered the competition in 1987?

Answer: 3

From the renaming of the VFL to the AFL in 1990 to 2006, West Coast and the Brisbane Lions each won 3 premierships, more than any other club in that time. The Eagles were the only club to have a 60%+ winning record in that time.
