Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Randy Johnson won the Cy Young Award five times, with four as an Arizona Diamondback. Which team did he retire with in 2009?

Answer: Giants

Johnson never played with the other teams listed. Randy began his career in 1988 with the Expos for two seasons, then he played 10 with the Mariners where he won his first Cy Young in 1995. His four remaining Cy Young awards came consecutively from 1999-2002 with Arizona.

The Diamondbacks traded Randy to the Yankees in 2005, then the Yankees traded him back in 2007. Johnson signed as a free agent with the Giants for the 2009 season, went 8-6, then retired. He was also runner-up for the Cy Young Award three times in his career, giving him eight potential award winnings.
2. Wade Boggs made his money for chicken dinners with the Red Sox and Yankees in 16 seasons combined. Which team did Wade spend his final two American League seasons with?

Answer: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The others listed were all National League teams. Wade won five batting titles in a six-season span from 1983-1988. He signed as a free agent with the Yankees in 1992. He took free agency again in 1997 and signed with Tampa Bay where he retired in 1999. Boggs was well known for his love of chicken, his recipe books, and restaurant endeavors.
3. Pitcher Tom Glavine started his career in 1987 with the Braves. In 2003, Tom signed as a free agent with the Mets for five seasons. Which team did he retire with?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

Tom never played with the other teams, and played his entire 22-season career with the Braves and Mets. In a remarkable career, he was in the top three for the Cy Young Award six times while winning two in 1991 and 1998. He went 305-203 in his career.
4. Jim Lonborg won the Cy Young Award for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. He played with Boston for seven seasons. Which National League team did he also play with for seven seasons and retired with?

Answer: Phillies

Jim pitched for the Red Sox from 1965-1971. In 1972, fans saw him in a Brewers uniform, but that didn't last long as in 1973 he was with the Phillies, and stayed there until his retirement in 1979.
5. Denny McLain was on top of the world in 1968 by winning 31 games in the season, the most wins since Dizzy Dean won 30 in 1934 with the Cardinals. Denny's world would come crashing down with allegations of drugs, gambling, and other illegal matters. In 1971, he was traded to the Senators and had a horrendous 10-22 season. From there he was traded to Athletics, then to which team who gave him his outright release after the 1972 season, ending his career?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

McLain didn't play for any of the other teams listed. After his stellar 1968 season, Denny went 24-9 in 1969 to win a consecutive Cy Young Award, and that was pretty much it for his career. 1970 saw him go 3-5 with the Tigers, and with all the allegations brewing, he was traded to Washington.
6. Pitcher Gaylord Perry was the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. Everyone seemingly wanted him because he played for eight teams in his 22-season career. Who did he eventually retire with in 1983?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

He won his first Cy Young in 1972 with the Indians in the AL, then the Padres of the NL in 1978. In his final six seasons, he made six moves to another team. Perry retired with 314 wins and was inducted into the hall in 1991. Gaylord never played for the others listed.
7. For 15 career National League seasons, Dale Murphy won two season MVP awards with the Atlanta Braves. They showed their so-called appreciation by trading him to the Phillies in 1990. Which National League team did Dale retire with in 1993?

Answer: Rockies

After playing in only 26 games with the Rockies in 1993, that was it. Dale retired with 398 home runs, and never saw a World Series game in his career. Both the Orioles and Indians were American League teams.
8. Red Sox star Fred Lynn began his career as being the first player in history to win the Rookie of the Year Award and the MVP Award in the same season. After seven seasons with Boston, he was traded to the Angels in 1981. Which team did he retire with in 1990?

Answer: Padres

After his stint with the Angels, it was on to Baltimore in the 1985 season through free agency. The Orioles traded Fred to the Tigers in 1988, then he signed with the Padres as a free agent and retired. Lynn did not play for the other teams listed.
9. Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan began his career in 1963 with Houston. He was traded to the Reds where he made his name with the Big Red Machine in the 1970s. After winning two MVPs with the Reds, he went back to Houston in 1980. Which team did Joe retire with in 1984?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

Joe never wore the uniform of the other teams listed. After his second time around with the Astros in 1980, Morgan was then a Giant in 1981 and 1982. He played one season with the Phillies in 1983, then retired as an Athletic in 1984. Joe later became a baseball broadcaster, along with his Hall of Fame induction in 1990.
10. Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson began his career with the Athletics in 1967. He was traded just days prior to the 1976 season to Baltimore, then found himself as a Yankee in 1977. He also played with the Angels for a few seasons. Which American League team did he retire with?

Answer: Athletics

Reggie's first season with the Yankees in 1977 was a memorable one for many reasons. One was his many feuds with manager Billy Martin, and another was hitting five home runs in the 1977 World Series. Jackson retired with 563 career home runs, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a sole inductee in 1993.
