Back in 1933, South Sydney, Eastern Suburbs and Western Suburbs all lost big-name players to the Kangaroo Tour, which departed during the season (July). Newtown, who lost their first 4 games that year, went on to win the competition. This was Newtown's second premiership, the first was in 1910.
