Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1983: What rule change came into the game?

Answer: Value of a try increased to 4 points

Parramatta completed a hat-trick of premierships. Brett Kenny made history by scoring 2 tries in 3 consecutive Grand Final. And FootyTAB opened its doors for punters.
2. 1984: Which team celebrated its 50th anniversary with a premiership?

Answer: Canterbury-Bankstown

Entering the premiership in 1935, Canterbury took out its third premiership in 1984, with a 6-4 win over Parramatta.
3. 1985: St George won all three grades?

Answer: False

St George won the two lower grades, but lost the first grade Grand Final to Canterbury by a single point, 7-6, through an Andrew Farrer field goal.
4. 1986: Is famous for the first time what happened?

Answer: All of these

A very eventful year. Parramatta beat Canterbury 4-2 in the first ever tryless Grand Final.
5. 1987: Manly beat Canberra 18-8 in the Grand Final. How many of their 18 points did Michael O'Connor score?

Answer: 14

In the Grand Final played at the SCG, O'Connor scored a try and 5 goals, Cliff Lyons the other try. Canberra made their first semi finals series in 1987, and got all the way through to the big one. It is a little-remembered fact that they went very close to making the finals in only their third season (1984), when they lost a playoff for 5th place to South Sydney, 23-2.
6. 1988: What did Balmain do that had never been done before?

Answer: Make a Grand Final from 5th spot

Balmain actually finished equal 5th, so had to playoff for 5th spot by beating Penrith (28-8). They then beat Manly (19-6), Canberra (14-6) and Cronulla (9-2) to advance to the Grand Final, where they were beaten by Canterbury 24-12.
7. 1989: One of the most exciting Grand Finals of all time was played, going into extra time for the first time. Who kicked Canberra's field goal during extra time to put them ahead 15-14?

Answer: Chris O'Sullivan

Six minutes into extra time, Balmain fullback Gary Jack dropped the ball in front of his posts, setting up an easy field goal from the scrum. Just before full-time, Balmain's Ben Elias hit the post with a field goal attempt that would have almost certainly won the Tigers their first premiership since 1969. Canberra ended up taking their first premiership win with a 19-14 victory.
8. 1990: Back-to-back titles for the Canberra Raiders. Who did they defeat in the Grand Final?

Answer: penrith

Canberra beat a determined Penrith team 18-14. Brad Fittler scored a try in his first Grand Final appearance.
9. 1991: Royce Simmons retired after the premiership win for Penrith, after scoring how many tries in the Grand Final?

Answer: 2

Despite Simmons' brilliant display, the Clive Churchill medal was awarded to ever-consistent Canberra lock Bradley Clyde. Penrith exacted revenge on the Raiders following their 1990 defeat, with a 19-12 win. This was the first premiership for Penrith.
10. 1992: Brisbane cantered to their first premiership, but their Grand Final opponents, St George, were involved in two extremely close and low-scoring semi-final contests. What scores were produced in these matches?

Answer: 3-2 and 4-0

St George beat Newcastle 3-2 in the minor semi final, and Illawarra 4-0 in the preliminary final. Brisbane, who had finished minor premiers by 6 points, accounted for St George 28-8 in the Grand Final. A truly memorable length of the field try was scored by Steve Renouf late in the game.
11. 1993: Which Canberra Raider became the first Canberra player, to win the coveted Rothman's Medal for player of the year?

Answer: ricky stuart

"Tricky" Ricky Stuart had a great year, helping Canberra to 3rd spot on the ladder. An amazingly close minor premiership, with all of the top 5 teams finishing within 2 points (that's just one win between 1st and 5th). Brisbane defeated St George in the Grand Final 14-6, and in doing so became the first team ever to win the premiership from 5th place.
12. 1994: Who dropped the ball from the kick-off to the Grand Final?

Answer: Marty Bella

This really put the Canterbury team, who started the games as favourites, on the back foot. Canberra went on to dominate the game from start to finish, wrapping up the premiership with a 36-12 win. It was a memorable finish for retiring captain Mal Meninga.
13. 1995: Saw another record made by the premiership winners, the "Sydney Bulldogs" (known by that name for that season only). What record was that?

Answer: Winning the premiership from 6th spot

The Bulldogs finished 6th in the first year the top 8 was introduced. They had to beat St George, Norths, Brisbane, and Canberra, all in sudden death semi-finals to advance to the big one. They then took on Manly, who had lost only 2 games all season. They showed one of the best defensive efforts ever seen in a Grand Final, to keep Manly tryless and win the match 17-4.
14. 1996: What controversy hit the competition in Round 1?

Answer: Forfeits by Super League-aligned clubs

In a never before seen incident, only 4 of the 10 schedule Round 1 matches took place. The Super League clubs (except Auckland, who were prepared to field a substitute team), decided not to play until a court decision relating to a Global League venture was handed down. All was settled by Round 2. Manly became the 1996 premiers in this tumultuous season, downing St George 20-8 in the Grand Final.
15. 1997: The competition was split into two competitions. How many teams contested the ARL semi finals?

Answer: 7

Never before seen, the 7-team series also saw the team from the Gold Coast finish 7th and qualify for the semis for the first (and only) time. They beat Illawarra in their first semi final, but lost to the Roosters in their 2nd. Newcastle beat Manly 22-16 with a last-minute try to win the ARL premiership, whilst the Broncos downed the Sharks in the Super League Grand Final, 26-8, the first Rugby League Grand Final played at night (and in Brisbane).
16. 1998: The introduction of a 10-team finals series saw the Bulldogs make the Grand Final from which spot?

Answer: 9th

An amazing feat, and one which seems unlikely to be repeated given that the top 8 series has been in place ever since. Canterbury beat both Newcastle and Parramatta in consecutive weeks in extra time to make the Grand Final, where they led at half-time 12-10. But Brisbane were far too good in the second half, winning the match 38-12 and wrapping up their 4th premiership.
17. 1999: In only their second season, the Melbourne Storm took out the Grand Final with what controversial play?

Answer: A penalty try

The video referee ruled that Craig Smith was hit without the ball by Saints player Jamie Ainscough, and would have scored a try. The Storm went on to win 20-18.
18. 2000: The Rugby League World Cup was taken out by Australia. Along the way, they beat Russia by a world record score. How many tries were scored in this match (by both teams)?

Answer: 20

Australia scored 19 tries in their 110-4 win, including 4 to Wendell Sailor, 3 to Ryan Girdler, 2 to Trent Barrett, 2 to Jason Croker, and 2 to Nathan Hindmarsh. Russia got over the line once to salvage some pride. Australia won their Semi-Final against Wales 46-22, and beat NZ in the Final, 40-12.

As a side note, England beat the USA 110-0 in a exhibition international in 1999, however this was not a world record result as it was not sanctioned as a full test. Thanks to Ozyboy for this extra info.
19. 2001: White hot favourites Parramatta were blown off the park by Newcastle in the Grand Final. How many points did they score in the first half?

Answer: 24

Perhaps an even more incredible statistic is that Newcastle only made 1 error all of the first half, through a loose pass going over the sideline. Parramatta restored some pride to only go down 30-24, but the Knights, led by Churchill medal winner Andrew Johns, were almost unstoppable.
20. 2002: For many, this will be remembered as the season where the Bulldogs were deducted 37 competition points for salary cap breaches, and went from minor premiers to wooden spooners as a result. But it was also the year the NZ Warriors made history by being the first NZ based team to make a Grand Final. Who scored their only try in the Grand Final in their 30-8 loss to the Roosters?

Answer: Stacey Jones

The Roosters wrapped up their first premiership since 1975. Well, that's the season quizzes for now, comments appreciated.
