Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If player X is 'dragged' what unfortunate fate has player X suffered?

Answer: Taken to the bench

Being 'dragged' is normally a result of a bad error or disciplinary reasons. If a player is reported the umpire has seen him do something illegal in the game of football and will have a trip to the tribunal on the following Monday or Tuesday.
2. If player X is 'filling the hole' what is player X doing?

Answer: Running into or standing in the forwards leading space

Filling the hole is one of the most courageous things a footballer can do. It takes guts to stand in front of a 6'4" and 100kg forward (normally full forward) sprinting straight at him. An example of this type of positioning was when Robert 'Dipper' Robert DiPierdomenico dropped into Gary 'God' Ablett's leading space and suffered a punctured lung for his trouble.

Another example was when Peter Caven dropped into Tony Locketts leading space which resulted in serious facial injuries for Caven and a 16 week suspension for Lockett.
3. If player X has kicked a 'worm burner' what has player X done?

Answer: Kicked the ball low to the ground

'Worm Burners' are usually a result of either a player looking for too much penetration on the kick or kicking under pressure. Hitting a player on the chest is what every footballer aims to do with every pass. Good players will do it time after time.
4. After kicking his worm burner, player X tries to compensate but goes too far. The player he kicked to is on the end of a...

Answer: Hospital pass

So called because it is thought that the player who stands under the pass will end up in hospital.
5. Player X redeems himself and the coach rewards him by putting him 'on the ball'. What has the coach done?

Answer: Placed him in the middle as a rover, ruck rover or centre man

Playing on the ball is usually limited to the most talented small type players in the team. Playing on the full forward is never much fun because in my opinion the full back position is the hardest in the game to play.
6. X is already playing on the ball but the runner comes out to X and says, "Mate, go play in the guts for a bit". Will X change his position?

Answer: No

In the guts, on the ball or playing as a follower all mean the same thing. He is playing as a ruck rover, rover or centreman. These 3 positions are the most illustrious and most people want to play in the guts.
7. X is doing no good in the guts, once again the runner comes out and says 'X, be accountable. Stick close to player Y- he is killing us. Don't let him get another kick'. What is the common terminology for what X is doing now?

Answer: X is doing a tagging job

If one player is doing well, the opposition will assign a player to stick on him or tag him. This is an attempt to minimise a player's impact. Most modern onballers (someone who plays in the guts) have adapted their game to help them shake their tag.
8. The commentators say 'Player X is there flying the flag for his team'. What is Player X doing?

Answer: Player X has got himself involved in a fight that he was not originally involved in

This is usually if his team mate is outnumbered, outsized or getting beaten. Will usually result in fine of up to A$5,000.00
9. X takes a mark on the wing. He plays on, evading one player but has to put his hand up and fend off Y avoid being tackled by Y. The commentators see this and yell 'X gives Y....'?

Answer: The don't argue

Usually done when a player is about to be tackled he raises his/her arm and fends off the player.
10. After looking at an incident on the replay the commentators say 'Player X, don't plan anything for this Monday.' What on earth could be meant by this?

Answer: Player X will probably have to front the tribunal on Monday night

Even though the day of the hearing may be Monday or Tuesday the commentators always say Monday. This is usually said if Player X throws a punch or something else that will result in a serious 'report'. Thanks for taking my quiz.
