The AFL grew to 16 teams in 1995 with the admittance of Frematle Dockers. It remained at 16 teams when Port Adelaide Power was admitted in 1997, as Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions merged to form Brisbane Lions. From 16 it is reduced to 8 teams in the post-season finals in September every year.
2. When did the AFL introduced the Top 8 end-of-season finals series?

Answer: 1994

It went from 4 to 5 in 1972, then became 6 in 1991, and then became 8 in 1994! The competition changed its name from the VFL to the AFL for the 1990 season.
