Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with the Babe of course: On what date did he hit homer no. 60 and off what pitcher?

Answer: Sept. 30 -- Tom Zachary

At Yankee Stadium on the last day of the season, Zachary of the Senators served up the Babe's 60th and last dinger of the year, breaking the old record of 59 set by -- George Herman Ruth in 1921. This was also the last game for one Walter Johnson, one of the greatest pitchers in history. He appeared as a pinch hitter.
2. Who else but Lou Gehrig could be in second place on this quiz? Who had more RBI's in 1927, Gehrig or Ruth, and what was the difference?

Answer: Gehrig had 11 more than Ruth

Gehrig had 175, Ruth 164. How would you like to have those guys on your team? Harry Heilman was third with 120.
3. Walter Johnson finished his career in 1927. He would be on most fans' short list of the game's greatest pitchers. What was his lifetime victory total?

Answer: 417

Only Cy Young with an incredible 511, had more wins than the Big Train. Johnson's won/lost percentage was .599, and his highest win total for one season was 36 in 1913. He lost 7!
4. In AL MVP voting for 1927, who got the most votes among pitchers?

Answer: Ted Lyons

Lyons, who went 22-14 with a 2.84 ERA for the Senators, was third in voting. Lou Gehrig was first. Babe Ruth didn't even place in the top 25, but only because previous winners were not eligible in the AL until 1930.
5. Who won the NL MVP for 1927?

Answer: Paul Waner

They all finished high in the voting, and all would become Hall of Famers, but "Big Poison" was first. All the Pirate outfielder and sometime first baseman did, was bat .380 with 237 hits. Not too shabby. Waner's middle name was Glee!
6. What Chicago Cubs outfielder hit .344 in 1927, and .336 lifetime over 14 years, but is not in the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Riggs Stephenson

Stephenson had only 1515 hits, averaging only about 108 per season. Apparently, not having enough at-bats has kept him out of Cooperstown.
7. The Yankees and Pirates were the pennant winners in 1927, but the Yankees won more games than the Pirates. How many more did the Yankees win?

Answer: 16

Yankees won 110, Pirates 94. The Bucs probably didn't feel very optimistic about playing the Yankees in the World Series.
8. Who batted .500 for the Yankees in the 1927 World Series, going 9 for 18 with 5 runs scored?

Answer: Mark Koenig

Shortstop Koenig had hit .285 during the season, last among Yankee regulars (what a lineup!), and would hit .276 lifetime so he didn't look like a Series hero going in.
9. Who hit .400 for the Pirates, going 6 for 15, and scored 5 runs?

Answer: Lloyd Waner

Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner, little brother of Paul "Big Poison" Waner, played 18 years in the NL, mostly for Pittsburgh. His lifetime BA was .316. Both brothers are in the Hall of Fame.
10. What was the outcome of the 1927 World Series?

Answer: Yankees 4 games, Pirates 0 games

The Pirates were overmatched in the Series, facing possibly the greatest team of all time. The Yankees hit .279 with 23 runs scored. The Pirates' numbers were .246 and 10. Yankee pitchers had an ERA of 2.00; Pirates' staff had 5.19.
