1. Frank Robinson was the first African-American to manage a Major League team when he took the helm of the American League Cleveland Indians in 1975. Who was the first National League African-American manager?

Answer: Frank Robinson

After being at the helm for three seasons in Cleveland, Frank took over the managing job of the San Francisco Giants in 1981, replacing Dave Bristol. He left San Francisco in 1984, and took over the Orioles in 1988. In 2002, Robinson tried to straighten out the Montreal Expos.

Rookie McGwire hit 49 with the Athletics in 1987. Thomas did not lead the league as a rookie, and hit only seven in 1990.
3. Which is not true about the 1966 World Series, that pitted the Orioles against the Dodgers?

Answer: Frank Robinson was the series MVP, and was ejected from game three

Robinson was the series MVP, along with winning the regular season MVP and batting for a Triple Crown. It was Frank's first season with the Orioles after being traded from the Reds. The Dodgers were shutout in games two, three, and four in the series.

The Dodgers scored a frivolous two runs in the entire series. Baltimore's reliever, Moe Drabowsky, pitched 6-2/3 innings in the series while striking out 11.
4. Which Major League outfielder also played in the first NFL Super Bowl in 1967?

Answer: Tom Brown

Brown was a 1963 Washington Senator who played the outfield and first base. In 1964, he became a Green Bay Packer as a defensive back, and went to Super Bowl I against the Kansas City Chiefs. He left the Packers in 1968, and became a Washington Redskin where he retired in 1969.
5. What a strange way to enter the record books. This player hit a home run in his first-ever Major League at-bat. He did it for a new expansion team, and also in the first-ever game for that team. Who was this player?

Answer: Al Woods

On April 7, 1977, Woods was a rookie Toronto Blue Jay. He pinch-hit in the fifth inning and there it went. He would hit five more in the season, and play for six seasons with the Blue Jays. His final season was as a Twin in 1986. Al hit 35 career home runs.
6. The Most Valuable Player award began in 1911, but was not called the MVP Award. What was it called?

Answer: Chalmers Award

It was the Chalmers Award until 1914. It was not a plaque, but was a new car presented to the most valuable player in each league. The stipulations behind the award was that a player could win the award only once in their career. Due to arguing between the two leagues, and only allowing one player from each team to be nominated, the award fell apart.

In 1931, the Baseball Writers Association of America revived the award and has handled the presentations ever since. Frank Schulte of the Cubs and Ty Cobb of the Tigers won the first award in 1909.

After the award was restructured by the BWAA, Frank Frisch and Lefty Grove won the award for their leagues in 1931.
7. Which manager set a record for managing seven different National League teams?

Answer: Frank Bancroft

Bancroft managed from 1880-1902. He managed the Worcester Ruby Legs, Detroit Wolverines, Cleveland Blues, Providence Grays, Philadelphia Athletics, Indianapolis Hoosiers, and the Cincinnati Reds. His only pennant came with the Providence Grays in 1884, after Charley Radbourn's record-setting 59 wins in the season. Mauch managed only two National League teams in his 26 seasons, while Dykes managed only the Reds in the NL. Billy Martin never managed in the National League.
8. Babe Ruth was the first player to hit 500 career home runs. Jimmie Foxx became the second member of the 500 Club. Who became the third member?

Answer: Mel Ott

Foxx hit his 500th in 1940, and would retire with 534. Ott became the third in 1945 with the Giants, and retired with 511. Williams hit 521, Mathews 512, and Kluszewski hit 279.
9. Which relief pitcher set a Major League record for throwing 18-1/3 innings in one game?

Answer: Zip Zabel

It was a 19-inning game against the Cubs and the Dodgers on June 17, 1915. Coming in relief in the first inning, Zabel went the rest of the way. His Cubs won the game 4-3. The Dodgers started Jeff Pfeffer on the mound, and he went the entire distance to take the loss. It would all be for not, as both teams went on to watch the Phillies win the National League pennant.
10. Which team set a Major League record for losing 20 consecutive games at home?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

The St. Louis Browns had only one highlight when they won the American League pennant in 1944, but lost the World Series to their crosstown rival Cardinals. From June 3 to July 7 in 1953, they lost 20 consecutive home games in front of their fans at Sportsman Park.

The Browns finished last in the American League with a 54-100 record, 46.5 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees. After the season, the franchise moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles in 1954.
