Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Los Angeles Dodgers have played in both Los Angeles and Brooklyn, but they have not always been known as the Dodgers. Which of these team names has not been associated with the Dodgers?

Answer: Franklins

While the team was in Brooklyn, they were known as the Atlantics, Grays, Grooms, Bridegrooms, Superbas, Robins and Dodgers. The Dodgers got their name in 1911 when street cars were popular in Brooklyn. The fans who would come to see games at Ebbets Field would have to cross over many series of train tracks, and they became known as the "Trolley Dodgers".

The team took the name "Dodgers" as a tribute to the many fans who came to see them play.
2. The Detroit Tigers began playing games at Comerica Park on April 11, 2000. Before that, they played in Tigers Stadium. What was the original name of Tigers Stadium?

Answer: Navin Field

The Tigers originally played at Bennet Park until 1912 when Navin Field was constructed. Navin Field was opened the same day as Fenway Park in Boston. Navin Field was later named Briggs Stadium in 1938 and then Tigers Stadium in 1961.
3. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been in existence since 1882, but they were known by another name before the Pirates. What was their original name?

Answer: Pittsburgh Alleghenys

The Pirates were known as the Alleghenys from 1882 until the end of the 1890 season when they became known as the Pirates. The Pirates originally played in Exposition Park, moved into Forbes Field and then played in Three Rivers Stadium before moving into PNC Park on March 31, 2001.
4. What MLB city has the Athletics not called home?

Answer: Baltimore

The Athletics started in Philadelphia in 1901 and played there until 1954. While there, they won five world championships. The team moved to Kansas City for the 1955 season, where they stayed through the 1967 season. The Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968 where they won the World Series in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1989.
5. The Milwaukee Brewers moved into County Stadium, in Milwaukee, for the beginning of the 1970 season. What city did the team play in during the 1969 season?

Answer: Seattle

The Seattle Pilots were in existence for one season. The team had a dismal record of 64 wins and 98 losses. The Pilots played in Sicks Stadium during their one year in Seattle. Sicks Stadium was demolished in 1979.
6. Crosley Field was the home of the Cincinnati Reds from 1912 to 1970. The field was the site of baseball's very first night game. Who provided the competition for the Reds for the game?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The first night game was played on May 24, 1935. The game saw the Reds defeat the Phillies 2-1. The next night game ever played also involved the Reds. The lights were turned on at Ebbets Field on June 15, 1938, a game that saw Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds no-hit the Brooklyn Dodgers and win 6-0. Making this story even more miraculous is that Vander Meer had thrown a no hitter in his previous start on June 11, 1938, marking the only time in baseball history no-hitters were thrown back-to-back. Vander Meer's first no hitter was thrown at home against the Boston Bees.
7. In the 50s and 60s the Braves have played in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta. Which player played in all three cities?

Answer: Eddie Mathews

Eddie Mathews played in Boston during the 1952 season, was a member of the Milwaukee team from 1953 to 1965 and then was a member of the Atlanta team for the 1966 season. He was traded from Atlanta to Houston in 1967. He played half the season in Houston, and the other half in Detroit, where he retired in 1968. Mathews was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
8. What sports Hall of Fame sits next to Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO?

Answer: Bowling

The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, and the Cardinals' Hall of Fame, are in the same building. The Anheuser-Busch theme song, "King of Beers" is played at the end of the seventh innings every game.
9. The first World Series was in 1903, as all previous end-of-season series were considered exhibition games. What ballpark was the site of the first World Series game?

Answer: Huntington Avenue Grounds

The first World Series was between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Pilgrims, with the Pilgrims winning 5 games to 3. Pittsburgh actually won the first game of the series, beating the great Cy Young 7-3. Deacon Phillippe was the winner for the Pirates.
Huntington Avenue Grounds was in existence from 1901 until 1911 and saw the Boston Americans, Boston Somersets, Boston Pilgrims and Boston Red Sox play there until it was replaced by Fenway Park. Cy Young threw the first modern day perfect game in the park on May 5, 1904.
