Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Minnesota Twins

Answer: Washington

Two teams from Washington DC, both called the "Senators", have moved to another location. The first of these occurred in 1961, when the Senators (established 1901) became the Minnesota Twins. The Senators had won the World Series in 1924 and would win two more as the Minnesota Twins, in 1987 and 1991.
2. Oakland Athletics

Answer: Philadelphia

The original Athletics began playing in Philadelphia in 1901, where they played until 1955 when they became the Kansas City Athletics. In 1968 they moved again, this time to Oakland where they had considerable success in the 1970s and 1980s.
3. San Francisco Giants

Answer: New York

The Giants along with the Brooklyn Dodgers (who moved to to Los Angeles) were part of the major expansion of the National League to the West Coast in 1958. To replace these two teams New York City would receive an National League expansion team in 1962 (the NY Mets).
4. Texas Rangers

Answer: Washington

In 1972, the Washington Senators (established 1961) moved to Texas.
5. Baltimore Orioles

Answer: St Louis

The Baltimore Orioles started playing as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901, the first year of play in the American League. The next year they became the St Louis Browns, and in 1954 moved to Baltimore. The name "Orioles" had been originally used by a team established in Baltimore in 1901 (which eventually became the NY Yankees).
6. Milwaukee Brewers

Answer: Seattle

In 1969 the Seattle Pilots played one season in the American League but disastrous finances and the lack of a decent stadium caused the team to relocate to Milwaukee where they took the name "Brewers". In 1977 a replacement AL team, the Seattle Mariners, began play.
7. Atlanta Braves

Answer: Boston

The Braves have had a long and illustrious career, going back to the foundation of the National League in 1876. Called the "Red Caps" or the "Beaneaters" they took the name "Braves" in 1912. In 1953 the team moved to Milwaukee, keeping the name "Braves", and then to Atlanta in 1966.

They were particularly successful in the 1990s (NL Pennants in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1999 plus a World Series win in 1995). The greatest claim to fame is the fact that both Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron played for the Braves at some point.
8. Los Angeles Dodgers

Answer: Brooklyn

In 1958 the National League moved two of its leading franchises, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, from the East Coast to new homes in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
9. New York Yankees

Answer: Baltimore

The original Baltimore Orioles (established 1901) played two seasons in the American League before moving to New York and becoming the New York Highlanders. This began the intense American League rivalry between Boston and New York. They adopted the name "Yankees" in 1913.
10. Washington Nationals

Answer: Montreal

Washington DC has seen two teams named "Senators" leave the city: in 1961 to Minnesota and in 1972 to Texas. In 2005 the troubled franchise in Montreal (the Expos) moved to Washington to become the Nationals, where they enjoyed more success in the 2010s.
