Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Pittsburgh Pirates' first-ever season MVP Award winner?

Answer: Paul Waner

All four Pirates are members of the Hall of Fame. Waner played 15 of his 20 seasons with the Pirates, and also played next to his brother Lloyd in the Pirate outfield. Paul won the MVP in 1927 for the National League, while Lou Gehrig of the Yankees won it for the American League.
2. Which player in the 1990s tied a Major League record by being walked in seven consecutive at-bats?

Answer: Jose Canseco

Late in the 1992 season, the Texas Rangers walked Jose in seven consecutive at-bats in August. Canseco was with the Athletics and had only hit 20 home runs at that point. Ironically, three weeks later he was traded to the same Texas Rangers. Jose tied the record of Tiger Billy Rogell who set the record in 1938. Rogell confusingly hit only three home runs in that 1938 season.
3. Which of these Hall of Fame members died just two days after he was inducted into the hall?

Answer: Kenesaw Landis

The Hall of Fame began inductions in 1936. Judge Landis was commissioned as the head of baseball after the 1919 World Series, named the Black Sox Scandal. He turned baseball around into a fair and balanced game with many rule changes in 1920, deemed as the start of 'modern day baseball'. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame on November 23, 1944, then died two days later.
4. Reggie Jackson was the first player in history to strikeout 2000 times in a career, and retired with 2597. Who was the next player to strikeout 2000 times?

Answer: Andres Galarraga

Galarraga played with seven teams from 1985-2004. Andres hit the 2000-mark at the close of the 2003 season. In his final season in 2004, he struck out three times in 10 at-bats to total his career with 2003. Sosa hit the 2000-mark in early 2004 with the Cubs, then retired in 2007 with 2306. Thome hit the mark in 2007. Bobby Bonds retired with 1757 strikeouts.
5. Which of these defunct National League teams never won a National League pennant?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders began in the NL in 1889. Even with the arm of Cy Young throughout the 1890s, the Spiders couldn't bag a league crown. The Orioles won three consecutive National League pennants from 1894-1896. The Grays won two National League pennants in 1879 and 1884. The Wolverines existed in the NL from 1881-1888, winning the pennant in 1887.
6. Who was the first manager in history to manage seven different teams?

Answer: Frank Bancroft

Amazingly, Bancroft managed for only nine seasons, yet with seven teams. He managed the Worcester Ruby Legs, Detroit Wolverines, Cleveland Blues, Providence Grays, Philadelphia Athletics, Indianapolis Hoosiers, and finished up with the Cincinnati Reds in 1902. Frank took only one team to a league pennant, and that was with Charlie Radbourn's arm and the Providence Grays in 1884. Torre managed five teams in his career, retiring in 2010. Griffith managed four teams, with the last being the Senators in 1920. Rigney managed three teams while retiring in 1976.
7. Batting for the cycle consists of hitting a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game. Who was the first player in baseball history to bat for the cycle twice in one season?

Answer: John Reilly

O'Neill batted for cycle twice in 1887, but Reilly beat him to the punch. John was with the Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association in 1883 when he performed the feat seven days apart in September. He played his entire 10-season career in Cincinnati between the Red Stockings of the AA and the Reds of the NL.
8. Which of these Hall of Famers had the nickname of "Corkhead"?

Answer: Johnny Bench

Bench was a career Cincinnati Red from 1967-1983. After winning the Rookie of the Year Award, he would win the NL MVP Award in 1970 and 1972, and a World Series MVP in 1976. Johnny also had the nickname, "Little General".
9. Which of these Hall of Fame members was not inducted all by himself in his year of induction?

Answer: Mel Ott

Mel Ott was a career New York Giant and hit 511 career home runs. He shared the induction podium with Athletic and Red Sox first baseman Jimmie Foxx in 1951. Hornsby batted for the Triple Crown twice and also won two MVPs in the 1920s. He was inducted alone in 1942. Stargell was a career Pittsburgh Pirate for 21 seasons. Willie was inducted all by himself in 1988. Wheat was an outfielder with Brooklyn from 1909-1926. Zack was a sole inductee in 1959.
10. Which of these pitchers set a Major League record for losing 15 consecutive games in one season?

Answer: Bob Groom

Groom was a 24-year old rookie in 1909 with the Senators. Overall in the season, Bob went 7-26 with 15 consecutive losses in the mix. Six times in his 10-season career, Groom lost more than 15 games in a season, retiring with a 119-150 record.
