Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which pitcher threw the first American League perfect game?

Answer: Cy Young

Young was with the Boston Americans in 1904 in his 15th baseball season. On May 5, he threw his perfecto against the Philadelphia Athletics and won 3-0. Young retired in 1911 with a record 511 wins, and would see the Hall of Fame in 1937.
2. Which pitcher set a record for throwing four one-hitters in his career, and yet never threw a no-hitter?

Answer: Pete Alexander

Alexander threw three Triple Crowns in his career. His triples were in 1915, 1916, and 1920. Pete never won a season MVP, and was never closer than third in 1911. Alexander was still a Hall of Fame pitcher with his 373-208 career record of 20 seasons, and was inducted in 1938.
3. Who was the first U.S. President while in office to attend a professional baseball game?

Answer: Benjamin Harrison

It was on June 6, 1892, as all the fans in attendance of the Cincinnati Reds vs the Washington Senators, watched the 23rd President of the United States more than the game itself. It was the first game in any league that a residing U.S. President took attendance to. The Reds defeated the Senators 7-4 in 11 innings. Harrison served from 1889-1893.
4. Who was the first pitcher in Major League history to lead his league in wins, and also post an ERA above 5.00 in the same season?

Answer: Remy Kremer

In 1930, Kremer was in his seventh season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He posted a 20-12 season record along with a pathetic 5.02 ERA. He also led the league by allowing 29 home runs, and allowed the most hits with 366 in the season. He fell one run short of allowing the most runs earned in the season with 154, second to Guy Bush of the Cubs.
5. The Atlanta Braves franchise began baseball in 1876 in the new National League. They were called the Boston Red Caps in their inaugural season, and kept that name until 1883 when a name change knew them as the Boston Beaneaters. In 1907, they became the Boston Doves. Why did the franchise change their name to the Braves in 1912?

Answer: Their owner was a Tammany Hall Chieftan

Owner Jim Gaffney never liked the team name of Doves, so he changed it in 1912 in honor of his own heritage. Something must have worked, because after finishing 52 games back of the NL winning New York Giants, the Braves won the World Series in 1914 under manager George Stallings. They defeated the Philadelphia Athletics four games to none.
6. Who were the first-ever brothers in Major League baseball that had one catch for his pitching brother in the same game?

Answer: O'Neill

Jack and Mike O'Neill were both with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1902 and 1903. Mike was the pitcher and older brother Jack was the catcher. In the same game as they shared the battery, pitcher Mike hit a grand slam in the game. Mike had a great batting experience in 1902, hitting that grand slam, a solo home run, five doubles, three triples, and a .319 average in the season. Mike retired in 1904 while Jack retired in 1906.
7. The National League in which year mandated that every one of their teams have a canvas tarp on-hand, and ready to cover at least the infield in the event of rain during a game?

Answer: 1915

All eight teams complied with the new ruling with open-arms. Prior to that, team workers had to spread oil and sawdust after a rain so the games could resume.
8. The National Association was the first recognized professional and organized baseball league in history. The NA existed from 1871-1875. Which pitcher had the most wins in each five seasons of the National Assocation's existence?

Answer: Al Spalding

In his five seasons in the NA before it folded, Spalding won 19, 38 41, 52, and 55 games with the Boston Red Stockings. After joining the new National League in 1876, Al won another 47 to lead the league with the Chicago White Stockings. In his seventh season in 1877, he went 1-0, then amazingly retired from baseball, lock, stock and barrel.

He died in 1915, and was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1939.
9. Eddie Grant was the first player in baseball history that was killed during war in 1918. Which team was Grant still under contract with whe he died?

Answer: New York Giants

Eddie was called to military service during the 1917 season. He had not played for two seasons, but was still under contract with the Giants. In 1910 and 1911, he led the league in singles. He was killed on October 5, 1918. Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves was the first-ever Major League player called to military service on June 27, 1917, just before Grant.
10. Who was the first player in Major League history to hit two home runs in his first two career at-bats?

Answer: Bob Nieman

Nieman broke in with the St. Louis Browns on September 14, 1951. It was less than one month after the Eddie Gaedel incident for the Browns and Major League baseball. It was his only two home runs of the season. Bob would hit 18 the following season, and hit 125 over his career of 12 seasons.
