Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With what team did Roger Clemens begin his Major League career?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Clemens started his career in 1984. He appeared in only 21 games, but still struck out 126 batters. In 1997, he began 2 seasons with the Blue Jays, then put on the pinstripes. Entering the 2003 season, Clemens never played for the other teams listed.
2. What team won the 1914 World Series?

Answer: Boston Braves

The Braves provided the first skunk in a World Series, by defeating the Philadelphia Athletics 4 games to 0. This National League team was managed by George Stallings. The Braves which changed names to the Boston Bees, eventually became the Milwaukee, and later Atlanta Braves. None of the other listed, existed in 1914.
3. I spent most of my 10 seasons in a Pirate uniform. I set a team record of hitting 54 home runs in 1949. In only 10 seasons, I hit 369 home runs. My only regret, is that I never made it to a World Series. Who am I?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

This right-handed slugger averaged almost 37 home runs each season. He had many stellar years, but 1949 for his greatest. Along with his 54 dingers, he had 170 hits, and 127 RBI's. The other listed, did not play anywhere near 1949, never hit over 50 home runs in a season, all played for many more than 10 seasons, and all went to the World Series.
4. How many times did Babe Ruth strikeout 100 times in a season during his 22 season career?

Answer: 0

As with Hank Aaron, the Babe never hit that negative mark in his career. He only hit the 90s area twice in his career. Ruth also struck out less than Aaron, with Aaron's 1383, compared to Ruth's 1330.
5. Which of the following Angels was not a member of the 2002 World Series championship team?

Answer: Dean Chance

Chance was a member of the inaugural Los Angeles Angels in 1961. The right-handers best season was in 1964, when he won the American League Cy Young Award for a 20-9 record.
6. Which of the following was involved in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, with the 'rigged' World Series?

Answer: Joe Jackson

It is unfortunate that Joe, as great a hitter as he was, is remembered for this negative measure. In 13 seasons, he averaged .356, including one season of .408, and leading the league twice in hits. The scandal was 'fixing' the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, which the Reds won 5 games to 3. Jackson still batted .375 in the Series.
7. Which of the following was the first to throw 25 shutouts in a season?

Answer: None listed

The record which still stood by the end of the 20th century, was only 16, thrown by Grover Cleveland 'Pete' Alexander in 1916. 25 is almost an unreachable barrier. This Phillies pitcher threw 12, two seasons earlier. Alexander was much overshadowed by the greats of Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Ed Walsh, and other greats in that era.
8. What baseball great had the nickname of "Gorgeous George"?

Answer: George Sisler

George Sisler was another of those great hitters in baseball history. He set a record for an amazing 257 hits in 1920 with the St.Louis Browns, and hit .407 that season. Two seasons later he hit .420. Both of these records stood throughout the 20th century. George Blanda was a NFL player, mostly with the Oakland Raiders.
9. Nolan Ryan set a season strikeout record in 1973, by striking out 383 batters in a season. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax was the only pitcher listed. Sandy struck out 382 in 1965 with the Dodgers. Ryan broke Koufax's record, with the last batter of the 1973 season.
10. I was the first player to win a World Series, by hitting a bottom of the ninth inning home run. I played 17 seasons, all with one team, and played with fellow Pirate Roberto Clemente and Harvey Haddix on that team. I was a second baseman, and retired in 1972. Who am I?

Answer: Bill Mazeroski

The home run feat happened in the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees. The Yankees outscored the Pirates 55 runs to 27 runs. The others listed, were not second baseman, never played for the Pirates, and never went to a World Series themselves.
