Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following decades did not see the New York Yankees in a World Series?

Answer: 1910s

The Yankees took on the name 'Yankees' in 1913 after being named the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, then the New York Highlanders in 1903. Their first World Series appearance was in 1921, and appeared six times in that decade. The 1940s saw them in five World Series, and the 1960s in five also.
2. Who was the first black pitcher in history to win a World Series game?

Answer: Joe Black

Black played for only six seasons, mostly with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1952, after going 15-4 in the season, he and the Dodgers beat the Yankees in game one of the series. The Yankees went on to win the series, four games to three.
3. Which of the following National Leaguers won 13 consecutive Gold Glove awards?

Answer: Ozzie Smith

In one of the biggest trades gone sour, Smith was traded from the Padres to the Cardinals after four seasons in 1981. Ozzie played his entire career of 2511 games at shortstop. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002. Robinson won 16 consecutive, but with the American League Baltimore Orioles.
4. Which of the following teams, in the first 100 years of Major League baseball, never threw a no-hitter?

Answer: San Diego Padres

Some of the other teams had no-hitters thrown by Juan Marichal (Giants 1963), Bob Wicker (Cubs 1904), and Don Nottebart (Colt .45s 1963). Even with some Padre greats over the years, they just could not no-hit their opponent.
5. Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 consecutive seasons in his great career. Which team did he manage for three seasons prior to joining the Athletics?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Brooklyn Robins (1914-1931) were named after Wilbert Robinson. Prior to joining the Athletics with the new American League in 1901, and beginning his 50-year streak in Philadelphia, Mack managed the Pirates as a player-manager from 1894-1896. With nine World Series appearances as an Athletic manager, Mack won his first of five crowns in 1910.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937.
6. Which pitcher in his Major League debut, not only shutout his opponent 16-0, but also had four hits of his own in the game?

Answer: Russ Van Atta

Van Atta debuted in April 1933 for the Yankees. He went 12-4 as a rookie, after shutting out the Senators in his first game, 16-0.
7. Which of the following team names existed for more than one season in either the American or National League?

Answer: Philadelphia Blue Jays

The Perfectos (1899), Somersets (1902), and the Pilots (1969) only existed for only one season by name. The Blue Jays were the Philadelphia Phillies, who after many dismal seasons, tried a name change for the 1943 and 1944 season. They went back to the Phillies name in 1945.
8. Shortstop Alex Rodriguez of the Mariners in 1996 was the first shortstop in over 50 years to win a batting title. Who won it before Alex?

Answer: Lou Boudreau

Boudreau batted .327 in 1944 to lead the American League and his Indians. It was the only batting title of Lou's career. In 1996, Rodriguez hit .358 to win his crown.
9. Which of the following set a NL record for a pitcher by hitting seven home runs in a season?

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe of the Dodgers hit seven in the 1955 season, complimenting his 20-5 throwing record. In 1956, and after going 27-7, he was the first pitcher in history to receive the Cy Young award.
10. Which of the following great sluggers never hit 500 home runs?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

After 17 seasons with the Yankees, 'The Iron Horse' hung up his cleats due to what would be later called Lou Gehrig disease. He fell short of the 500-mark by hitting 493. His last game was in 1939, then died two years later.
