Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of these four powerhouse teams, who won the most games in the season?

Answer: 1906 Cubs

Under the guidance of player-manager Frank Chance, the Cubs went 116-36 in the season. Although losing to the White Sox in the World Series, it would be the first of three consecutive World Series appearances for Chicago.
2. Which team had the player that hit the most home runs in their season?

Answer: 1927 Yankees

Ruth hit 60 in the season, and would be the third of four 50+ home runs seasons for the Babe. This helped the Yankees to the World Series against the Pirates, and a four games to none series win. Both Bench of the Reds and Frank Robinson of the Orioles hit 28, and Frank Schulte led the Cubs with seven home runs.
3. After a tremendous season, only two of these teams went on to win the World Series in their year. Which teams did not?

Answer: 1971 Orioles / 1906 Cubs

The Orioles lost to the Pirates four games to three, as they watched Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente be crowned the series MVP. The 1906 Cubs lost to the White Sox four games to two. The Yankees had the best success in their World Series of 1927, skunking the Pirates four games to none, while the Reds defeated Boston four games to three.
4. Which team had the most 20-game winners in the season?

Answer: 1971 Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles reached a milestone in 1971 which no other team had ever accomplished. They had four 20-game winners in Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson, Jim Palmer, and Dave McNally (winning 21). The Cubs had two 20-game winners in the names of Mordecai Brown and Jack Pfiester.

The Yankees had only one pitcher win 20, and that was Waite Hoyt by going 22-7. The Reds had six pitchers win in double-figures, and three of those peaking at 15.
5. Two of the four teams had the season MVP on their team. Which teams were they?

Answer: 1927 Yankees / 1975 Reds

The season MVP did not begin until the 1909 season, so that left Cub greats such as Frank Chance, Johnny Evers, Joe Tinker, and Mordecai Brown out of the picture. The MVPs were Lou Gehrig of the Yankees, although Ruth hit 60 home runs in that season, and the Reds' second baseman Joe Morgan.

The closest Oriole in the MVP voting was Frank Robinson who finished third behind Oakland's Vida Blue and Sal Bando.
6. Of these respective teams and their starters, which team had five .300 hitters in the season?

Answer: 1927 Yankees

The Yankees had an amazing five, with Lou Gehrig leading the way with his .373 average and the first of two MVPs. The Reds had four, the Cubs three, and the Orioles had Merv Rettenmund, who was the only regular to reach .300.
7. Which of these teams had the league's Cy Young winner in the season?

Answer: None

The Cy Young Award did not begin until 1956. Although the Orioles had four 20-game winners, Vida Blue took the Cy Young honors in 1971 with his 24-8 record for the Athletics. Tom Seaver of the Mets won it in 1975, five spots ahead of the Reds' Don Gullett.
8. One of these teams saw their pitcher throw the second lowest ERA in all of baseball history. Which team had this honor?

Answer: 1906 Cubs

The Cubs were the name, and Mordecai Brown was definitely the game. His 1.038 ERA in 1906 was the second lowest in the 19th and 20th centuries of baseball. Brown went 26-6 while appearing in 36 games. Teammate Jack Pfiester threw a 1.508, which ranked 37th in the two centuries. The combined 1906 Cubs ERA was an amazing 1.75.
9. Fan support is what pushes teams to win. Which of these teams led their league in fan attendance, but did not come close to the 1,000,000 mark?

Answer: 1906 Cubs

Their were only eight teams in the National League in 1906, and baseball had not fully caught on yet. The Cubs' attendance was 654,300 at West Side Park II. The Yankees in 1927 blew baseball apart with their 1,164,015 fan attendance, which was even more than the 1971 Orioles with 1,023,037.
10. Which of these teams played at Riverfront Stadium in their respective years?

Answer: 1975 Reds

Although winning their division by 20 games over the second place Dodgers, the Reds still finished second in the league with fan attendance behind the Los Angeles club. Riverfront Atadium opened in 1970, experienced the Big Red Machine, the NFLs Cincinnati Bengals, and was then demolished in 2002. The stadium hosted five World Series.
