Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1960s, long before the presence of Sammy Sosa, the Chicago Cubs had three big guns who topped the team's list for career home runs. They were Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and which other slugger?

Answer: Ron Santo

Santo played third base for the Cubs. When they all retired, Banks topped the team's list with 512 home runs, Williams with 392, and Santo with 337. It is ironic that even with those three big guns, the Cubs lost 100+ games twice in the 1960s, and finished second only one time.
2. Which Oakland Athletics duo combined for 80 home runs for the team in 1987?

Answer: Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco

McGwire hit 49 and took the Rookie of the Year honors in 1987. Canseco hit 31 in 1987, and took the Rookie of the Year award in 1986.
3. Which two 1961 New York Yankees combined for 115 home runs in the season?

Answer: Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris

Maris broke Babe Ruth's 1927 record by hitting 61 in the season. Mantle who was riddled with injuries, still hit 54 of his own. Maris and Mantle were numbers one and two for the MVP balloting. The Yankees had six big guns hit more than 20 home runs in the season for a team total of 240. They were Maris, Mantle, Bill Skowron, Yogi Berra, Johnny Blanchard, and Elston Howard.
4. In 1956, the Brooklyn Dodgers had the league's home run leader in Duke Snider with his 43. Who else did Brooklyn have that hit 32 in the season?

Answer: Gil Hodges

None of the others ever played for the Dodgers. Hodges played 16 of his 18 seasons with the Dodgers and retired with 370 in 1963. He hit 361 as a Dodger, placing him number two in the team list. Snider, who hit 407 in his career, topped the team's list with 389.
5. The 1964 Minnesota Twins had six players hit 20+ home runs with a team total of 221 for the season. Harmon Killebrew led the team with 49. Two players hit 32 also. One was Tony Oliva and the other was who?

Answer: Bob Allison

The six Twins that hit 20+ were Killebrew, Oliva, Allison, Jimmie Hall, Don Mincher, and Bernie Allen. The Twins still finished the season tied for sixth place of ten teams.
6. Murderer's Row, a.k.a. the 1927 New York Yankees had a double-barrel shotgun with two players that combined for 107 home runs in the season. The left barrel was Babe Ruth. Who was the right barrel?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Ruth hit 60 home runs to set the new standard in 1927. Gehrig who hit 47 of his own, won the MVP for the season instead of the Babe. The Yankees went all the way to the World Series, and defeated the Pirates four games to none.
7. 1966 belonged to the World Series winner Baltimore Orioles and their Triple Crown winner Frank Robinson. Robinson hit 49 home runs in the season. Which other big gun hit 34 for the team?

Answer: Boog Powell

The others were Orioles, but they never hit 30 in a season in their careers. Frank Robinson was in his first season with the Orioles after being traded from the Reds. Powell was in his sixth season. Powell retired at the top of the team list for his 303 home runs, then was later surpassed by Cal Ripken Jr and Eddie Murray.
8. In 1965, Willie Mays smacked 52 home runs to lead the league for the fourth time in his career. Which other Giant big gun hit 39 of his own?

Answer: Willie McCovey

The others never played for the Giants, and they all retired in the 1950s. Mays won his second MVP award in 1965 also. When both Willies retired, Mays was on top of the team's list for home runs with 646, followed by the great Mel Ott with 511, then McCovey with 469. Barry Bonds later hit 586 in a Giants uniform.
9. In 1936, Lou Gehrig led the Yankees with 49 home runs. Which other slugger was second on the team?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

The others were all former Yankees, but had already retired from baseball. DiMaggio hit 29 home runs and batted .323 as a rookie, but the Rookie of the Year award did not begin until 1947. Gehrig retired with 493 career blasts, while DiMaggio hit 361 in only 13 seasons.
10. The 1998 home run race between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, saw Big Mac hit a season record 70 home runs to win the crown, although Sosa still won the MVP. Which of the following Cardinals was totally overshadowed by McGwire and hit 31 home runs in the season?

Answer: Ray Lankford

The others never hit 30 in a season. Sosa of the Cubs hit 66 in 1998. It was his first of four consecutive 50 home run seasons. Lankford repeated his career high from 1997 with his 31 in 1998. In 2001, the Giants' Barry Bonds broke McGwire's season record by hitting 73.
