Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which decades did Bjorn Borg play professional tennis?

Answer: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s

Bjorn Borg turned pro in 1973 and played professionally until 1984. He returned to the professional circuit in 1991-1993 but did not win a match in that comeback.
2. In what country was Bjorn Borg born?

Answer: Sweden

Bjorn Borg was born in Stockholm, Sweden on June 6, 1956. While for tax reasons he moved to Monte Carlo, he always played representing Sweden.
3. Relative to its size, Scandinavia had a large number of Number 1 ranked tennis players in the late 20th century. Which of the following players was never ranked Number 1 in the world (using ATP singles computer rankings)?

Answer: Anders Jarryd

Bjorn Borg was first ranked Number 1 in 1977. Stefan Edberg was first ranked Number 1 in 1990. Mats Wilander was first ranked Number 1 in 1988.
While Anders Jarryd made Number 1 ranked doubles player, his highest singles rating was Number 5.
4. How would Borg's adult tennis playing style be best described?

Answer: Baseliner

Bjorn Borg was a baseliner. He won matches by consistency and fitness. His goal was simple "Hit the ball one more time than the other player".
Borg was certainly not a serve and volley player, although his serve was probably under-rated. A counter-puncher plays mainly from the baseline but is more aggressive than Borg was, seeking a ball from which to attack.
A hacker is a beginning player.
5. Which Grand Slam did Bjorn Borg win the most times?

Answer: French Open

Bjorn Borg won the French Open six times. He won Wimbledon five times. For many people the Wimbledon wins were most notable because of some of the epic matches that he played and also because, in theory, his style was not suited to the grass courts at Wimbledon. He never won the Australian or the U.S. Open.
6. Borg was a cool and collected tennis player as an adult, rarely showing emotion on or off the court?

Answer: True

Borg was was not a favorite of many journalists because he never gave them anything interesting to write about apart from his feats on the tennis court.
A match for Borg against John McEnroe was quite a contrast in both tennis style and personality!
7. As a junior player Borg initially had a much more volatile temperament than he did as an adult player?

Answer: True

In Borg's autobiography he notes that as a junior he went as far as breaking rackets and swearing on the court before calming down.
8. Which of the following players did Bjorn Borg have a great rivalry with?

Answer: John McEnroe

Bjorn Borg played in a different era to Stan Smith and Roger Federer and never played either of them in professional tennis. Borg only played Mats Wilander once in his career, beating him 6-1 6-1 in the first round of Geneva in 1981.
9. What material were Borg's rackets made of throughout his professional career?

Answer: Wood

At the beginning Borg's career wood was the only choice for rackets. At the latter stages of his career steel was beginning to enter the market, but Borg never switched. Even in his comeback in the 80's he still stubbornly used wooden rackets in spite of the technology advances having rendered them obsolete.
10. What combination of grips did Bjorn Borg use for his groundstrokes?

Answer: Single-hand forehand, double-hand backhand, right-handed

A double-handed backhand has come in and out of favor for professional players. At the time Borg was playing it was extremely rare. Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg inspired a generation of "copy-cat" double backhand tennis players.
