Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During CFL expansion to the United States, how many seasons did the Canadian and American teams compete in separate, North-South divisions?

Answer: 1

The eight Canadian teams were in the Northern Division in 1995, with Baltimore, San Antonio, Birmingham, Memphis and Shreveport in the South.
2. When was the last season prior to 2000 when the CFL had the traditional five in the west, four in the east divisional setup, with Winnipeg in the west?

Answer: 1996

Following the folding of the American teams at the end of the 1995 season, the CFL reverted to its traditional 5 and 4 divisional alignment in 1996. Ottawa folded at the end of that season, and Winnipeg limped awkwardly back into the east.
3. When was the last time prior to 2000 that a divisional winner also won the Grey Cup, and what year was it?

Answer: 1998 Calgary

Yes, the Flutie-led Argonauts finished first in the east in 1996 and 1997, but the last time a first place team won the Cup was Calgary in 1998. Hamilton finished second to Montreal in 1999.
4. In what year did the CFL go to a single-game final for both the eastern and western championship games?

Answer: 1973

When Hamilton outpointed Ottawa 30-27 in a two game, total point series in 1972, that marked the last time the CFL had anything but a lose-yer-out format.
5. Which year did the CFL go to an 18 game season?

Answer: 1986

6. Which team holds the record for number of regular season victories to finish first in a division?

Answer: 1989 Edmonton 16 wins

The 1989 Eskimos topped the chart with 16 wins in an 18 game schedule. By the way, the 1996 and 1997 Argonauts did have 15 as did Baltimore in 1995, as have many other teams.
7. What year did the eastern division go from 14 to a 16 game schedule?

Answer: 1974

8. What year saw a three way tie for first place in a CFL division?

Answer: 1977

Edmonton, BC and Winnipeg tied for 1st with identical 10-6 records in 1977. Edmonton got the bye to the western final after the tie breaking rule was applied.
9. When was the last time two teams competed in the Grey Cup where both finished no better than 3rd in their division?

Answer: 1970

Calgary finished 9-7, tied with Edmonton in the west for second in 1970, but got bumped to third in the tie-breaker. Montreal finished 3rd at 7-6-1 a point behind Toronto.
10. When was the last time prior to 2000 that a team won its division by winning less than 10 games?

Answer: 1985

The Hamilton Tiger Cats finished tied for 1st with Montreal in 1985 with identical 8-8 records, leading to a reforming of the playoff format the next year.
11. Counting regular season, playoffs and Grey Cup, how many games did Edmonton play in 1960?

Answer: 22

Edmonton finished second to Winnpeg in 1960 with a 10-6 record, won the two-game total point against Calgary, and won 2 of 3 against Winnpeg to advance to the Grey Cup - which they lost through sheer exhaustion to Ottawa. Calgary played 21 such games in 1970.
12. Out of the original 4 eastern teams, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton, what was the longest stretch where none of them were in the Grey Cup?

Answer: 5 years

Toronto won the 1991 cup against Calgary, then the traditional east went unrepresented until the Flutie led Argos recaptured the CFL crown in 1996. From 1992 the teams that played western based teams were - Winnipeg 1992 and 1993, and Baltimore 1994 and 1995. Yes Virginia, Winnipeg is still an eastern team.
13. No team in the CFL has ever had a winning record without making the playoffs - true or false?

Answer: False

False - the last team to do it was Sacramento in 1994 with a 9-7 record, but both BC and Saskatchewan turned the trick in the 1980s.
14. Which is the only 4th place team to advance to the Grey Cup?

Answer: none

The 1997 Saskatchewan Roughriders finished tied for third with BC, but got third place on a tie breaker. If BC had gone that year, they would have been the only team to do this, Sask beat Calgary in the semi and squeaked out a 1 point win against Edmonton in the western final.
15. When was the only time that a team had a losing season but also won the Grey Cup?

Answer: 2000

In 1988 Winnipeg won the Cup after finishing 9-9, a feat repeated in 1989 by Saskatchewan, but since 1960 the only team to take home the hardware after a losing season are the 2000 BC Lions who finished 8-10-0-1, the 1 being an overtime loss.
