Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which manager sat and watched the 2003 Tigers compile their worst season in history, with a 43-119 record?

Answer: Alan Trammell

The Tigers had never won less than 50 games in their franchise history, beginning in 1901. In 2003, Detroit could not even muster a pitcher who would win 10 games. Trammell, a former 20-season Tiger player himself, was in his first season in this managerial role.
2. Who took the newly formed New York Mets, to only 40 wins in their first season in 1962?

Answer: Casey Stengel

After taking the Yankees to 10 World Series appearances in 12 seasons, Casey took on the brand new Mets in 1962. In his four seasons with the team, Stengel helped them to four consecutive last place finishes. In those four years, the Mets never won 55 games in a season.
3. Which team did Connie Mack manage to a 36-117 season record?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

With Mack managing the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 seasons, this was a good option. In 1916, they ended the season in their last place, eighth spot finish, 40 games behind seventh place Washington. Mack managed the A's from 1901-1950, and also the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896.
4. Which Giant slugger, also managed the team to a pathetic 55-98 record in 1943?

Answer: Mel Ott

The Giants, in whichever city they have played out of, have been very consistent in the big leagues. Met Ott, who played for 22 seasons with the Giants, and also smacked 511 home runs, was the player-manager from 1942-1948. The New York club moved to San Francisco in 1958.
5. Who helmed the 1939 St. Louis Browns to their worst season in history, with a 43-111 season?

Answer: Fred Haney

This was Haney's first season as a manager in the Major Leagues. After another season and a half, the Browns fired him, and he shelved himself until 1952, when he appeared at the Pirates' helm. Not winning over 60 games in three seasons with Pittsburgh, he then tried his hand with the Milwaukee Braves.
6. The fresh-seasoned 1977 Toronto Blue Jays, began their franchise with a 54-107 record. Which manager never won over 60 games in their first three seasons?

Answer: Roy Hartsfield

With the worst record in the Majors in 1977, Hartsfield, in his first managerial season, would last only two more seasons managing. It would be 16 seasons before the Blue Jays would take a World Series crown in 1992, under Cito Gaston.
7. In the 2002 season, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays experienced their worst season in their short franchise history. Who was looking the other way when the team finished with a 55-106 record?

Answer: Hal McRae

After winning 58 games in 2001, then three less the following season, the Devil Rays let McRae go. The 2002 season saw Tampa Bay have only their designated hitter, bat over .300, and no pitcher win more than eight games.
8. 1969 saw the Seattle Pilots in their only Major League season. Who helmed the team to a last place finish in the American League West?

Answer: Joe Schultz

1969 was the only full season managing in the Majors for Schultz. His Pilots finished with a 64-98 record. The Pilots moved to Milwaukee the following season and become the Brewers. In 1970, the Brewers managed to win only one more game with 65.
9. In one of baseball's worst seasons, and in Babe Ruth's final season in baseball, the Boston Braves finished with a 38-115 record in 1935. Who stood at the podium for that dismal team?

Answer: Bill McKechnie

It was rather ironic that this was Ruth's only season with the Braves before retiring. They won 40 games less than their previous season, then won 33 games more in 1936 without the Babe.
10. The worst season for the Texas Rangers in the 20th century, was in the 1972 season. Which manager watched the team lose 100 games?

Answer: Ted Williams

The Rangers hid their faces with a 54-100 season. Only one pitcher reached the 10 game plateau, Rich Hand, who was 10-14. This was Williams' fourth season with the franchise, moving from Washington after the 1971 season. 1972 was the final season managing a Major League team for this Hall of Fame great player.
