Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alfred Manuel Martin was born on May 16, 1928, in Berkeley, California. In 1950, he began his playing career with which team?

Answer: New York Yankees

Martin never played for the others listed. In his first season with the Yankees, he was a reserve second baseman. In 34 games he batted .250, and even tipped out a home run in the season. In 1953, this 165 pound second baseman, hit his career high 15 home runs in the season.

He played seven seasons in the pinstripes before being traded to the Kansas City Athletics in midseason of 1957.
2. As a player, how many World Series did Billy play in?

Answer: 5

When a player provides a service for the Yankees, they usually have World Series credits. Billy went to his five with New York, in 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1956. All were against the Brooklyn Dodgers except for the first, which was played against the New York Giants. Billy's World Series record was 4-1.

In 1953, there was no World Series MVP named, but his 12-24, and batting .500 including two home runs certainly deserved the award. His career World Series batting average was .333 with five home runs.
3. Which position did Billy Martin primarily play throughout his career?

Answer: Second base

Billy was a second baseman throughout his career. He was a Yankee backup to Jerry Coleman and Gil McDougald. The emergence of Bobby Richardson in 1957, pretty much gave Billy his pink slip with the team, and he was traded to the Athletics. Billy also had seven errors in his 26 games in that Yankee season.
4. Billy played for two National League teams in his career. The Cincinnati Reds was one. Which was the other team?

Answer: Milwaukee Braves

Martin played the 1960 season with Reds. In 1961, baseball saw him in a Braves' uniform, but it was very short-lived. After playing in only six games for Milwaukee, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he finished out the season and retired. He retired with a .257 average, along with 64 home runs.
5. With which team did Billy first try his hand at managing?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

Billy managed all these teams, but his first managerial role came in 1969 with the Twins. Due to numerous conflicts with his players and the inability to communicate, Billy ended up on the streets after the season. After sitting out the 1970 season, he was hired to skipper the Detroit Tigers in 1971.
6. How many World Series did Billy Martin help his team to as a manager?

Answer: 3

All were with the Yankees in 1976, 1977, and 1978. With an all-star cast of Ron Guidry, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and Thurman Munson, Martin won his first World Series in 1977 against the Dodgers. They also repeated the defeat against Dodger-blue in 1978. His only loss was to the Reds in 1976.
7. As a manager, Billy was in a brawl in a nightclub with his own starting pitcher, and put the pitcher in the hospital. Who was this player on the short end of the stick?

Answer: Dave Boswell

This happened in Martin's first managing season with the Twins in 1969. Martin had many documented skirmishes with his team, and this led to him being fired at the end of the season. The Twins still won the AL West with a 97-65 record.
8. With Martin's on-again off-again relationship with Yankee manager George Steinbrenner, how many times was Martin fired as manager of the Yankees?

Answer: 4

Martin came from the Texas Rangers in mid-season 1975. He continued to manage the Yankees until 1979, which included three World Series appearances. Steinbrenner fired him after the 1979 season. After three years of managing the Athletics, Steinbrenner hired Billy back for the 1983 season, then fired him again after a third place Yankee finish. Billy was back in the pinstripes in 1985, this time for a second place Yankee finish, and George fired him again.

His final stint with the Yankees was during the 1988 season, but was fired mid-season for his fourth time, and gave way to new Yankee manager Lou Piniella. Billy died 14 months later.
9. In which year did Billy Martin win the Manager of the Year award?

Answer: He never did

The Manager of the Year award did not begin until 1983, with Tom Lasorda and Tony LaRussa being the first recepients of the award. Billy only had three chances to win it, during his 1983, 1985, and the 1988 season. Billy's career managerial record was 1253 wins against 1013 losses. 941 of those wins were as a Yankee skipper.
10. With which team did Billy manage, that won the most games in a season under his helm?

Answer: Yankees

In his first managing season in 1969, the Twins went 97-65. However, it was the 1977 Yankees, Reggie Jackson and company, that went 100-62 in the season. Martin's worst managing season was with the 1982 Oakland Athletics, which saw the team go 68-94. This was Billy's final season in Oakland.
