Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The curse began in 1983 after an infamous trade. What day did the trade happen?

Answer: June 15

Hernandez was traded from the Cardinals to the Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey. Allen was a journeyman during his 11-year career, and Ownbey was out of baseball at age 28. It was discovered that Hernandez had used cocaine.
2. In 1985, the Cardinals were in the World Series against the Royals. A controversial call in the ninth inning started the unraveling of the Cardinals. Which Royal was called safe at first even though a replay showed he was out?

Answer: Jorge Orta

After the controversial call on Orta, the next batter, Steve Balboni, hit a pop-up that neither Darrell Porter or Jack Clark could catch. The Royals won game six 2-1, and game seven 11-0.
3. What Cardinal rookie was also said to be a victim of the Curse of Keith Hernandez in 1985?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Prior to the NLCS, Coleman was injured after the automatic tarp at Busch Stadium rolled over his leg. Coleman had a rookie record 110 stolen bases.
4. 1987: Cardinals go to the World Series against, but lose to Minnesota. What is not true about this?

Answer: Joe Niekro won game 7

Clark was injured at the end of the season after a cleat got caught in the artificial turf at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Minnesota only won 29 times on the road and had the fewest wins of any team that won a World Series. The winner of game 7 was Frank Viola.
5. The 1996 NLCS had the Cardinals facing the Braves. The Braves won in seven games. How many runs did the Cardinals score during the final three losses?

Answer: 1

The Cardinals lost game five 14-0, game six 3-1, and game seven 15-0. The only run scored in game 6 was via a Mark Wohlers' wild pitch that allowed Royce Clayton to score. The ironic part about this is that the Braves lost to Joe Torre and the Yankees, who was fired from the Cardinals the year before.
6. In 2000, the Cardinals were upset by the NL Wild Card winners, the New York Mets. Mark McGwire was injured. What were his stats in the series?

Answer: 0-2 with a walk

After the Cardinals lost, the Mets went to the World Series, where they lost to the Yankees.
7. 2001 NLDS: What team did the Cardinals face?

Answer: Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks won in five games, with two of their victories being decided by one run.
8. 2002 was a tragic year for the Cardinals, with the passing of pitcher Darryl Kile and broadcaster Jack Buck in a four-day period. What happened to the Cardinals that season?

Answer: Won NL Central

The Cardinals won 97 games, four less than the Braves. They lost in the NLCS to the Giants, who had only two NL pennants in the previous 44 seasons. Ironically, the Cardinals beat the Giants in the 1987 NLCS.
9. 2004 was a bad season for the Cardinals, but good for the Red Sox, as they won the World Series to break the Curse of the Bambino. Who wore Keith Hernandez's old number 37?

Answer: Jeff Suppan

Suppan was a pitcher. In the third inning of game, Suppan blundered as he got caught up at third base. David Ortiz, normally a DH playing 1B, threw the ball to Bill Mueller, who tagged out Suppan.
10. Did the Cardinals win any games during the 2005 NLCS?

Answer: Yes

The Cardinals lost to the Houston Astros four games to two. The Astros went to the World Series for the first time in franchise history, but lost to the Chicago White Sox. The 2005 series helped break 'The Curse of the Black Sox', but extended the 'Curse of Judge Hofheinz', which may be the reason the Astros had yet to win a World Series.
