Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The World Figure Skating Championships began in 1896. In which city did the first contest take place?

Answer: St Petersburg

The championships were organised by the International Skating Union. The first event had just four competitors and was won by Gilbert Fuchs.
2. In 1902, a woman won a medal for the first time.

Answer: True

Originally, all the entrants for the championships were expected to be men as competitive figure skating was not considered to be a sport for women, but in 1902, Madge Syers decided to try her luck. She was British and she won the silver medal. These championships were held in London.
3. In 1900 and 1901, why was no bronze medal awarded?

Answer: There were only two contestants

In 1900 the championships were held in Davos, Switzerland and won by Gustav Hugel from Austria. In 1901 the championships were held in Stockholm, Sweden and won by a Swede, Ulrich Salchow.
4. What contribution did Ulrich Salchow (from Sweden) make to figure skating which is still in use today?

Answer: He invented a new jump

Salchow invented a new jump, in 1909, which is known by his name. It is still used by competitors. It involves a half turn in the air so that the landing is facing in the opposite direction. Later skaters added full turns to the jump. A triple salchow means three and a half turns in the air. In its simple form, it is considered the easiest jump.
5. By the end of the twentieth century, all competition performance required sequences of steps, some jumps, and what else?

Answer: Spins

Somersaults are done by only a few skaters and are not a required element. Spins mean that the competitor stands on one foot and rotates on the spot. The many positions of the body during this action give rise to many kinds of spin. Reverse steps is not a named, required element, although skaters frequently skate backwards. Lifts need two skaters, with one lifting the other and so are not required by solo skaters and therefore not required in all performances.
6. At the end of the twentieth century, there were four disciplines in the World Championships. Mens', ladies' and pairs' were three. What was the fourth?

Answer: Ice dance

Such things as team skating and all-ladies' pairs were reserved for performance entertainment.

Dance was the last competition to be included.
7. The World Championships are an annual event. Since they began has there ever been a year when they have not taken place?

Answer: Yes

The Figure Skating Championships were not held during World War I or World War II.

There was no championship between 1915 and 1921 or 1940 and 1946.

In 1961 the competition was also cancelled following a plane crash that killed the entire USA team.

In both cases, they restarted in Stockholm, Sweden
8. When the first woman entered the competition she had to compete against the men. In which year did the competition split into two: mens' and ladies'?

Answer: 1906

The gold medal was won by Madge Syers from Great Britain, The pairs skating section started in 1908 and the first gold medal for that went to Anna Hubler and Heinrich Burger of the German Empire.
9. The ladies' champion from 1927 to 1936 went on to become famous in what other way?

Answer: She became a film star

Her name was Sonja Henie from Norway and she made several films in Hollywood, including 'Sun Valley Serenade', where, in 1941, she starred with the famous Glen Miller Band.
10. Which man was the first to win a total of 10 titles in the World Championships?

Answer: Ulrich Salchow

Ulrich Salchow, from Sweden, won the most in total, although Karl Schaffer won the most (7) consecutively.

Sonja Henie from Norway won ten in succession for the ladies, as did Irina Rodnina of the Soviet Union in Ice Dancing, but she paired with two different partners to achieve that.
