Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps the greatest rivalry in thoroughbred horse racing history took place in 1978 when Affirmed and Alydar faced each other ten times including the Triple Crown races. How many times did Affirmed defeat Alydar?

Answer: 7

The 1978 Triple Crown was called the greatest duel of all time. Affirmed won all three races to become the eleventh Triple Crown winner. But Alydar didn't make it easy for Affirmed. He finished a close second in all three races and even temporarily had the lead in the Belmont coming down the home stretch.
2. On July 5, 1980, tennis fans were treated to one of the greatest Wimbledon finals of all time. The two combatants met each other fourteen times in their careers each winning seven matches. Who were these supertars?

Answer: Bjorn Borg - John McEnroe

Bjorn Borg was going for his fifth Wimbledon title in a row. John McEnroe was the young cocky kid who was playing in his first Wimbledon final. What ensued was a classic battle between two gladiators with swords clashing and shields drawn and neither giving in to the other. Borg prevailed in the nearly four hour event which included a twenty minute tie breaker in the fourth set won by McEnroe (18-16). McEnroe saved two championship points in the fourth set and then saved five more in the tiebreaker to take the match to the fifth and final set which Borg eventually won.
3. The greatest rivalry in the NBA was undoubtedly the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, who met each other in the NBA finals 12 times between 1959-2010. When did the Lakers beat the Celtics in the finals for the first time.

Answer: 1985

The two storied franchises faced each other in some classic battles over the years. The Celtics led by Bill Russell dominated the Lakers in the 1960s beating the Wilt Chamberlain led Lakers in the first eight meetings. The rivalry faded a little during the 1970s even though both won titles.

Then in the 1980s the rivalry was rejuvenated when the Lakers drafted Magic Johnson and the Celtics picked up Larry Bird. The pair already had a rivalry in college when Michigan State met Indiana State in the 1979 NCAA Final Four title game where Johnson's Spartans defeated Bird's Sycamores. That rivalry lit a spark in the Celtics-Lakers feud and the Lakers finally beat the Celtics in the finals in 1985.
4. In the sport of boxing, the rivalry between Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier was unmatched in the history of the heavyweight division. Although they only fought each other three times they were all classic battles. Where did their final title fight take place?

Answer: Manila

The fight was known as the "Thrilla in Manila" thanks to Ali who, in his poetic pre-fight ritual stated, "It will be a killa and a thrilla and a chilla, when I get that gorilla in Manila". The fight was the best out of their three bouts with Ali winning in the 14th round by a TKO. Ali stated after the fight that it was the closest to dying he had ever been.

He always said that Joe Frazier brings out the best in him and that "he is the greatest fighter of all time, next to me". Their first bout in March 1971, labelled the "Fight of the Century", was unprecedented. Frazier was the title-holder (undefeated) and Ali, the former title-holder, was also undefeated (he was stripped of his title in April 1967 when he refused to join the US Army).
5. NCAA college football has created some classic rivalries over the years. What yearly rilvary game is referred to as the Iron Bowl?

Answer: Alabama vs Auburn

In the stste of Alabama the cry is either "Roll Tide" or "War Eagle". The game is considered one of the best and hardest fought rivalry games. The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry, known simply as "The Game" has had a longer and more publicized rivalry. The game is always the last game of the season and usually decides the Big Ten title. Texas-Oklahoma is another great rivalry which is dubbed as the "Red River Shootout".

The Army-Navy game of course is one of the oldest rivalry games having been a traditional game since 1890.
6. In the sport of NASCAR racing no rivalry comes close to these two drivers who, in 63 of the races in their career, finished first and second to each other. Who were these two legendary drivers?

8. It began in 1960 and the magazine "Sports Illustrated" once called it the greatest rivalry in NFL history. These two franchises have won over 30 divisional titles between them plus many NFL Championships (which includes Super Bowl titles). Who are these fierce NFL rivals.

The Redskins-Cowboys rivalry began in 1960 when Dallas entered the league as a new franchise. The two have had some of the most classic games against each other. It was like watching the old TV westerns where the cowboys and indians would meet each other.

They have met each other in the NFC Championship game in 1972 and 1982 with the Redskins winning both. The Packers-Bears rivalry is the oldest in the NFL dating back to 1921.

When Jack Nicklaus appeared on the scene as a rookie, Arnold Palmer was the man at the top of his game and when they met in the 1962 U.S. Open fans witnessed the past, present and future of golf. Nicklaus forced a tiebreaker round and went on to win. The two had brought golf to the forefront and Nicklaus went on to win 18 major events to Palmer's seven.
