1. Colchester United have played their home games at the Colchester Community Stadium since 2008. What was the name of their original ground, which might call to mind a Daniel Craig film?

Answer: Layer Road

Colchester United were founded in 1937 and played at Layer Road until their new stadium was opened. The club were elected to the Football League in 1950 and gained promotion to the Championship division, the second tier, for one season in 2007. By 2016, they had been relegated to League Two, the fourth, and lowest, level of the English Football League.

The Daniel Craig film was 'Layer Cake', from 2004.
2. London based Crystal Palace FC were promoted to the Premier League in 2013. Which of these is their bird related nickname?

Answer: Eagles

Crystal Palace have been around since 1905, with their home ground being Selhurst Park since 1924. They were in the Premier League when it began, in 1992 although they haven't always maintained their position. Their original nickname was the Glaziers, but they officially adopted the Eagles nickname in 1973.

A few clubs are known as Magpies, with Newcastle United probably the best known of them. Bradford City are the Bantams while the Canaries are Norwich City.
3. The team from Charlton, in London, has which of these names?

Answer: Charlton Athletic

Known variously as the Addicks, the Valiants or Red Robins, Charlton Athletic date from 1905. The club has had its problems over the years, going into administration in 1984. Charlton Athletic won the FA Cup in 1947.
4. With a nickname of the Railwaymen, which of these Cheshire teams was relegated to League Two at the end of the 2015-16 season?

Answer: Crewe Alexandra

The nickname comes from Crewe's long established connections to the railways. Crewe Alexandra were established in 1877, taking the second part of their name from the wife of the then Prince of Wales, later to be King Edward VII. The club has remained in the lower reaches of the English Football League, but does crop up as a quiz question quite often since it is one of the few with a letter X in its name.
5. Which was the only non-English team playing in the Championship division of the English Football League, when they were relegated from the Premier League in 2014?

Answer: Cardiff City

Originally Riverside AFC when they were founded in 1899, the club has played under the name Cardiff City since 1908. Their club colours of blue and white gave them their nickname of the Bluebirds. A change to a red strip, imposed by owner Vincent Tan, lasted only from 2012 to 2015 before the club reverted to blue. Cardiff City have the honour of being the first non-English club to win the FA Cup, achieving this in 1927.
6. After their promotion from the National League in 2016, Cheltenham Town FC became the only team from which English county to be playing in the four tiers of English football?

Answer: Gloucestershire

Cheltenham Town became champions of the Conference Premier, as it then was, in 1999 which earned them promotion to Division Two, the fourth tier of the league. Since then, they have managed to reach Division One, where they stayed for four seasons. In 2016-17, they are playing in Division Two, having won promotion form the National League (formerly the Football Conference) at the end of the previous season.

Answer: Highfield Road

Located in the West Midlands, Coventry City have been members of the Football League since 1919, and were winners of the FA Cup in 1987. The team was in the Premier League when it was founded in 1992, but have slipped down the rankings since. They were relegated to the Championship in 2001, then to League One in 2012. They were relegated to League Two at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Highfield Road was rather antiquated, and was demolished following the move to the new stadium. The other grounds listed are all homes to Premiership Rugby Union teams.
8. Which of these English places had a team in League Two of the English Football League, when the local team won promotion from the Football Conference (now National League) in 2014?

Answer: Cambridge

Dating from 1912, when they were known as Abbey United, Cambridge United first reached the Football League higher levels in 1970. They were relegated from League Two in 2005 and returned in 2014. The name change to Cambridge United took place relatively recently, in 1951.
9. Which player, who went on to play for England, Liverpool and Newcastle United, among others, began his professional career at Carlisle United FC in 1979?

Answer: Peter Beardsley

Beardsley played for Carlisle from 1979 until 1982 before going on to play for Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle United, to name just a few of his clubs. He also won 59 caps for the England senior team.

Carlisle United were at one time in the top tier of the league, when it was known as Division One, in 1974-75, but were relegated to the Football Conference in 2005. They returned to League Two after one season.
10. Crawley Town FC is a team located in which part of England?

Answer: South

Crawley is in West Sussex, and Crawley Town FC was a founder member of the West Sussex Football League in 1896. They were promoted to the League Two at the end of the 2010-11 season with their home games played at the Broadfield Stadium.
