Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Precious metal shines On the climb to Paradise Could this metal fly?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

The 'climb to Paradise' referenced Led Zeppelin's song 'Stairway to Heaven', which also includes the lyric 'all that glitters is gold'. The band got together in 1968 with original members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones. 'Stairway to Heaven' is one of their best known songs from a long and hugely successful career.
2. Napoleon's last Defeated by Wellington Swedish acronym?

Answer: ABBA

All the bands listed have Swedish connections, but the clues should have pointed you towards Napoleon's final and unsuccessful battle in 1815, at Waterloo. ABBA used the title of 'Waterloo', and mentioned Napoleon in the lyrics, for their entry in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1974. This acted as the springboard for a career which lasted until the band split in 1983.
3. A reflected face For a male viewing his look Who was one of five?

Answer: Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson had so many hits that choosing one to convert to haiku form took a while. 'Man in the Mirror' was released in 1988, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. Michael began his career singing with his brothers as The Jackson Five and the other names I offered as choices are also solo artists who have found success after leaving the band with which they began.
4. Middle East nobles Oscillating back and forth Band in deep trouble?

Answer: Dire Straits

The Middle Eastern nobles are sultans and to oscillate is to swing, so I hope you found your way to 'Sultans of Swing'. The song was the band's first success although only on its second release. It reached the top ten in both the USA and UK and showcased the guitar playing abilities of the band's lead singer and songwriter, Mark Knopfler.

The band chose their name to reflect their situation while trying to make their way in the music business.
5. A route that's lengthy And bends upon its travels For which British group?

Answer: The Beatles

Of course, this is another band with a long list of hits but I used 'The Long and Winding Road' which featured on the 1970 album 'Let it Be'. Although, as usual, songwriting credits were listed as Lennon/McCartney, this song was written by Paul who also sang the lyrics. The song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, although Paul was far from happy with the version released.
6. A welcoming inn A state in America For which high flyers?

Answer: Eagles

The welcoming inn is, as I hope you realised, located in California. 'Hotel California' was written by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey and is probably the song most people would come up with first if asked to name an Eagles song. The hotel might have welcomed you in, but once there 'you can never leave'.
7. A road where bread's made And a saxophone solo From which Scottish man?

Answer: Gerry Rafferty

'Baker Street' is Gerry Rafferty's biggest hit, helped by the saxophone solo provided by Raphael Ravenscroft. The song reflected Gerry's life at the time when he was travelling between his home in Scotland and London. 'Baker Street' reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and one better on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number two.
8. 'Robin Hood' theme tune Every action for you Which Canadian?

Answer: Bryan Adams

Helped by the success of the 1991 film 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves', which starred Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, Bryan Adams had huge chart success with the theme tune. '(Everything I Do) I Do it for You' reached number one on the singles charts of pretty much every country you can think of.

In the UK, having got to the top of the UK Singles Chart, it stayed there for an incredible sixteen weeks until we were all sick of it.
9. Evening alone Regretting drifting apart From which music king?

Answer: Elvis Presley

'Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart?' are the opening lyrics to 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?', which Elvis recorded in 1960. The song actually dates back to 1926 and had been recorded several times previously. Elvis's version, you won't be surprised to know, reached number one on several pop music charts, including those of the USA and UK.
10. They came in first place And are claiming victory Which monarchs are they?

Answer: Queen

Much as I'd have liked to convert 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to haiku form, it defeated me, so I chose 'We are the Champions' instead. The song was released in 1977 with 'We Will Rock You' as its B side. 'We are the Champions' reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 to join a long line of hits for the band.
