Colchester United were founded in 1937 and played at Layer Road until their new stadium was opened. The club were elected to the Football League in 1950 and gained promotion to the Championship division, the second tier, for one season in 2007. By 2016, they had been relegated to League Two, the fourth, and lowest, level of the English Football League. The Daniel Craig film was 'Layer Cake', from 2004.

A club, simply named Accrington FC, was formed in 1876 and was one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. But the club was dissolved in 1893 due to financial problems. Stanley Villa chose this name as they met at Stanley Working Men's Club, aka the Stanley Arms, in Stanley Street). They changed their name to Accrington Stanley in 1893.
