Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Orlando Cepeda, the great slugger of the Giants, was traded by the Giants in 1966 in their seemingly endless quest for one more good pitcher. To what team was he traded?

Answer: Cardinals

Traded for Ray Sadecki. Cepeda had some fine years after the trade, but Sadecki didn't really deliver what the Giants wanted.
2. Bobby Bonds, father of Barry Bonds, was traded by the Giants in 1975. To what team?

Answer: Yankees

Traded for Bobby Murcer. Murcer was a good player, but the trade never made sense to me (from the Giants point of view).
3. In a legendary trade, the Mets traded a still-developing young pitcher named Nolan Ryan. To what team?

Answer: Angels

His last season at the Mets was in 1971 at the age of 24. He was traded for Jim Fregosi. Frank Estrada, Don Rose and Leroy Stanton also went with Ryan from the Mets to the Angels in the trade.
4. Frank Robinson had a fine career in the American League with the Orioles. He also had a fine career before that in the National League. With what team?

Answer: Reds

His last season at the Reds was 1965. He was traded because he was "old" for his age. Really?
5. Lou Brock had a great career with the Cardinals. What team traded him there in 1964?

Answer: Cubs

From a poor team to a team that often contended and often won.
6. Tom Seaver was one of the most popular Mets, but in 1977 he was traded away: to what team?

Answer: Reds

Many thought Tom Terrific would be a Met forever, but it didn't play out that way.
7. Clete Boyer was a key player with many Yankee championship teams. To what team was he traded?

Answer: Braves

He became a power hitter in Atlanta (everyone became a power hitter in Atlanta). His last season at the Yankees was 1966.
8. Gaylord Perry joined the Giants in 1962, and at the end of the 1971 season was traded to ______ ?

Answer: Indians

Traded to the Indians for Sam McDowell after many fine years with the Giants. Another trade that (from a Giants viewpoint) didn't make sense. Frank Duffy was also included in the trade with McDowell to the Giants for Perry.
9. Ralph Kiner, slugger for the Pirates and long-time Mets broadcaster, was traded at the end of his playing career to _____ ?

Answer: Cubs

Good player on a bad Pirate team. He joined the Pirates in 1946 and was traded in 1953.
10. Which of these stars was not traded to the Mets?

Answer: Felipe Alou

Mays was traded at the end of his career to the Mets, back to his New York roots. Hodges and Snider also played for the Mets late in their careers; Hodges later became their manager. Alou, a good player for the Giants, played for many other teams - but not for the Mets.
