Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What college football team was known for its '12th man' tradition?

Answer: University of Texas A&M

This tradition started in 1922 when an actual person in the stands (a basketball player who had played some football) was called down to the bench and asked to suit up on the sideline because of the toll injuries had taken on the team. From that time on, A&M students stand to show loyalty and a readiness to help the team if needed.
2. What do Clemson football players touch as they run out on the field for a home game?

Answer: A rock

Howard's Rock has been part of the pre-game tradition at Clemson since 1966. The rock was brought back from Death Valley California by a fan and given to head coach Frank Howard. Eventually the rock helped lead to the stadium nickname (Death Valley) and was mounted and rubbed by all players who were, in the words of the coach, 'Willing to give 110%'.
3. What two traditional college football programs played in a rivalry known only as, 'The Game'?

Answer: Harvard vs Yale

Harvard and Yale have one of the oldest rivaries in college football (120+ years). "The Game" is a battle between the Crimson (Harvard) and the Bulldogs (Yale).
4. Which team ran out for the game through a giant 'T' made by their marching band?

Answer: Tennessee Volunteers

In the 1960s, UT head coach Doug Dickey put orange 'T's on the helmets and had the 'Pride of the Southland Marching Band' form a giant 'T' for the team to run through as they came out on the field.
5. Which school band awarded a high honor allowing a sousaphone player to 'Dot the I' during the halftime show of every football game?

Answer: Ohio State University

This tradition started in 1936 when the band director Eugene Weigel had the band form a script 'Ohio' on the field. The first year a trumpet player dotted the 'I', but in 1937 Weigel had an inspiration and put in the tuba player instead. The 'Kick, turn and bow' part of the tradition was added in 1938.
6. What famous figure painted on a library visible from the south end zone of Notre Dame Stadium, is seen holding up both arms as if signaling a touchdown?

Answer: Jesus

'Touchdown Jesus' is painted on Hesburgh Library on the Campus of Notre Dame and is visable in Notre Dame Stadium.
7. Which teams played in the 'Iron Bowl'?

Answer: Alabama vs Auburn

The Iron Bowl is an unofficial nickname given to the annual battle between the Crimson Tide and the Tigers (some say because of the iron ore deposits in and around the Birmingham area). The first game of this long running rivalry was played in 1893, but was suspended for 40 years in the early part of the 20th century due disagreements between the schools on where the game was going to be held.

The series resumed in 1948 and continues today.
8. Which college football team's fans stayed after the game, win or lose, for a 'Fifth Quarter' that included popular songs, often to a polka rhythm?

Answer: University of Wisconsin

Win or lose, a large crowd (35,000+) of fans stay up to an hour after each home and away games to listen the band play songs like 'Chicken Dance' and 'Beer Barrel Polka'.
9. Which college football team got their distinctive helmet design from Princeton University?

Answer: University of Michigan

Michigan's helmet design started in 1938 when head coach Fritz Crisler came from Princeton bringing with him the 'winged' helmet design modified with the 'Maize and Blue' colors for Michigan. It was thought that the design might help the QB see receivers running downfield.
10. What two teams played in an annual game called 'The Civil War'?

Answer: University of Oregon vs Oregon State University

The rivalry between the Ducks from Eugine (Oregon) and the Beavers from Corvallis (Oregon State) started in 1894 and is the oldest rivalry on the west coast. The trophy for the game was called 'The Platypus Trophy' until the trophy was lost in the early 1960s (it has since been discovered and there is a move on to restore this prize).
