Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following pitching greats lost 200+ games in their career?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Gibson of the Cardinals was 251-174 in his career. Koufax of the Dodgers, whose career was shortened due to arthritis was 165-87. Wilhelm spent most of his career as a relief pitcher, and never lost more than 11 games in a season. Wilhelm went 143-122. It was 'Spahnie' who went over the 200 mark. In his 21 season career, mostly with the Braves, Spahn had 363 wins against 245 losses.
2. Which player had the nickname, 'Little Professor'?

Answer: Dom DiMaggio

Dom was the youngest of the three DiMaggio brothers, with Vince being the oldest and Joe being in-between. Ironically, Dom played his entire career from 1940-1953 in a Boston Red Sox uniform, while brother Joe was in the pinstripes of the Yankees. In the 1946 MVP voting, Dom finished ninth while Joe finished 19th. Vince played only 10 seasons in the National League for five different teams. All DiMaggio brothers had the middle name of Paul.
3. Which American League batter led the league in strikeouts for the 2003 season?

Answer: Jason Giambi

Vaughn only saw limited duty with the Mets, and struck out 22 times in 2003, although he did once lead the league with 181 in 2000. Canseco retired after the 2001 season, and Jim Thome led the National Leaguer in 2003 with 182. Giambi struck out 140 times in his second season with the Yankees. This was a new career high for Jason, surpassing his 112 in the 2002 season with New York.
4. Jim and Gaylord Perry were the first pitching brothers in history to do which of the following?

Answer: Both won a Cy Young Award

Jim won the first one in 1970 as a Minnesota Twin. Gaylord won his Cy two seasons later with the Indians. Gaylord won another in San Diego in 1978, and became the first pitcher in history to win it in both leagues. Gaylord was the younger of the two. Neither pitcher ever led the league in strikeouts.
5. In 1920, George Sisler set a major league mark for 257 hits in a season. He was also the runner-up to lead the league in home runs in the season. Who led the league in home runs that season?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Sisler of the St. Louis Browns came so close to winning the Triple Crown in 1920, but took a backseat in almost every category to the Babe. 1920 was also the first time a player had reached the 30 home run plateau, and Ruth did it with an amazing 54. Sisler had 19 for the season.
6. Who led the Majors in 2003 with being hit by a pitch?

Answer: Craig Biggio

In his 16th season, and all with the Astros, Biggio led the Majors for the fifth time in his career. In 2003, he was hit 27 times, including his 241st career bruise.
7. Which of the following pitching greats, led the league with wins in one season, then the most losses in the following season?

Answer: Steve Carlton

In 1972, in his first season after coming from the Cardinals, Carlton won the Triple Crown and the Cy Young Award for leading the league with 27 wins. In 1973, still a Phillie, he went an embarrassing 13-20. Steve went on to have four more 20 win seasons after that, including three more Cy Young Awards.
8. Which Oriole struck out seven batters back-to-back in his first Major League start?

Answer: Sammy Stewart

Although all Baltimore Orioles, Stewart appeared in only two games in 1978, and struck a total of 11 batters. He never broke the 100 mark in his 10 year career.
9. Which 2004 franchise was once called the Somersets?

Answer: Boston

The 2004 Red Sox franchise began as one of the new American League teams in 1901. Their initial name was the Americans. In 1902, the team changed their name to the Somersets. 1903 saw another name change, the Pilgrims, and it worked out the first World Series victors in history. In 1907, the franchise became the Red Sox.
10. Who led the Majors in home runs after baseball's first season without Babe Ruth?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Ironically, it was the Babe's former teammate. Ruth's last season was in 1935 with the Boston Braves. Gehrig hit 49 for the Yankees to lead the Majors in 1936. Foxx and Greenberg led the Majors in 1934, and DiMaggio led both leagues in 1937 with 46.
