Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Daniel Ricciardo first performed a "shoey" on the podium after finishing second at the 2016 German Grand Prix. Which world champion won the race to get the opportunity to witness first hand (but not partake in) this strange new celebration?

Answer: Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton, the defending world champion, recorded his fourth consecutive victory at the German Grand Prix in 2016. He controlled the race from the start and was barely challenged by the two Red Bull drivers, who completed the podium places. While the race might not have been the most exciting one in F1 history, Australia's Daniel Ricciardo certainly made the podium memorable when he pulled off one of his boots, filled it up with the champagne leftover after the celebrations and drank from it. Ricciardo's "shoey" soon became an expected part of the show whenever he finished in the top three and was able to make a post-race podium appearance.

The "shoey" - an Australian party ritual normally conducted with a pint of beer - gained popularity at Australian motor racing events in 2015 and 2016 and Australian MotoGP rider Jack Miller highlighted it internationally when he took his first win in the category in June 2016. Daniel Ricciardo's maiden F1 "shoey" in Germany came just over a month later.

Former F1 world champions Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso all took part in the 2016 German Grand Prix, but finished 5th, 8th and 12th respectively.
2. At the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo claimed second place and poured out a "shoey" on the podium for the second race in succession. Which former Red Bull driver performed it on this occasion?

Answer: Mark Webber

Mark Webber, who raced for Red Bull in F1 from 2007 to 2013, was the podium interviewer for the Belgian Grand Prix held at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in August 2016. It was Webber's retirement from F1 in 2013 that opened up the opportunity for Daniel Ricciardo to graduate from Red Bull's junior team, Toro Rosso, and join the main outfit in 2014. The race was won by Mercedes' Nico Rosberg, but Daniel Ricciardo was the runner-up and took the opportunity to repeat his "shoey" from the previous race in Germany. Webber duly accepted his fellow Australian's request to take part, but Rosberg and the third-place finisher, Lewis Hamilton, didn't join in!

David Coulthard raced for Red Bull from 2005 (their first season in the sport) until his retirement in 2008; Sebastian Vettel raced for Red Bull from 2009-2014; and Daniil Kvyat joined them in 2015, before being unceremoniously demoted back to Toro Rosso after the first four races of the 2016 season.
3. Daniel Ricciardo shared a podium "shoey" with his team-mate at the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2016. Who was his team-mate at the time?

Answer: Max Verstappen

After Daniil Kvyat was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso after his home race in Russia, Red Bull executed a driver swap and Daniel Ricciardo's new team-mate for the remainder of the 2016 season was Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen. The Dutch teenager justified his promotion immediately by winning his first race with Red Bull and his second place in Malaysia was his third of the season and fifth podium appearance in total. Although Verstappen started ahead of Ricciardo on the second row of the grid in Malaysia, it was Ricciardo who had the better race and he was ahead of Verstappen and inherited the race win when the previous leader, Lewis Hamilton, suffered an engine failure in his Mercedes. Their one-two finish was Red Bull's first since the end of the 2013 season.

The Friday practice session for the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix took place on Max Verstappen's 19th birthday. Earlier in 2016, the Malaysian government had announced that the legal age for drinking alcohol in the country would be raised to 21 from December 1st, 2017. If they'd chosen to implement that policy immediately, then Verstappen's "shoey" would have been illegal!

The incorrect options all took part in the race, but Carlos Sainz drove for Toro Rosso, Valtteri Bottas for Williams and Esteban Ocon for the Manor team.
4. The 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix actually saw multiple "shoeys" carried out on its podium. The third-place finisher accepted the offer of one from Daniel Ricciardo and then went on to win that year's world championship. Who was this?

Answer: Nico Rosberg

Third place at the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix went to Mercedes' Nico Rosberg who had been the pole sitter for the race, but ended up at the back of the pack after a collision with Sebastian Vettel in the first corner. Despite this mishap, he was able to extend his lead in the world championship as his team-mate and nearest challenger, Lewis Hamilton, retired from the race following an engine failure. Another win at the next race in Japan then gave Rosberg enough of a points advantage that he was able to hold onto his championship lead to the end of the season, despite Hamilton winning all of the last four races. Rosberg became world champion 34 years after his father, Keke Rosberg, had achieved the same feat, and then stunned the F1 community by announcing his immediate retirement from the sport.

The Malaysian Grand Prix wasn't Rosberg's first opportunity to take part in Ricciardo's new "shoey" tradition, but it was the first time that he accepted the challenge. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, who both drove for Ferrari in 2016, ended up 4th and 6th in the championship, respectively.
5. At each race, a representative of the winning team also collects a trophy on the podium. Which man, the Red Bull team principal, fulfilled this role at the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix and was persuaded to collect a "shoey" at the same time?

Answer: Christian Horner

Red Bull's first one-two finish since 2013 was obviously an occasion that warranted the team principal himself going up to the podium to collect the team's winner's trophy - as, in general, the top teams circulate this honour around various members of their race team. The usual downside of making this very public appearance is that the team's representative tends to get showered in champagne, but is not given their own bottle to retaliate with. However, the "shoey" might potentially be seen as a bigger downside of making a podium appearance when Daniel Ricciardo is around...

Christian Horner's "shoey" was probably not the most embarrassing or unpleasant celebration of his career as Red Bull's team principal. At the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006, he had rather unwisely promised to jump naked into the team's swimming pool if one of their drivers ended up on the podium (Red Bull had never scored a podium finish at that point in their F1 history). David Coulthard duly finished third and thanks to a sponsorship deal between Red Bull and the 'Superman Returns' movie, Horner was able to claim a Superman cape to cover his modesty when he honoured his word and jumped into the water.

Horner is also known outside of F1 for marrying the singer and former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, in 2015. The incorrect options were all F1 team principals in 2016 - Toto Wolff at Mercedes, Maurizio Arrivabene at Ferrari, and Franz Tost at Toro Rosso.
6. The F1 "shoey" wasn't restricted to F1 drivers, team members or pundits. At the 2016 US Grand Prix, the Hollywood actor Gerard Butler conducted the podium interviews and was persuaded to take part in one. However, since Butler was known to be teetotal, Daniel Ricciardo filled his shoe up with which apt drink instead of the customary champagne?

Answer: Red Bull

The 2016 United States Grand Prix was held in Austin, Texas and won (for the fourth time in five years) by Lewis Hamilton. The podium was completed by Nico Rosberg in second place and Daniel Ricciardo in third. Clearly, Ricciardo had given some thought as to what he would do in celebration if he reached the podium, as he had prepared a non-alcoholic "shoey" for the Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who had been granted the honour of conducting the podium interviews. Ricciardo employed the obvious choice of non-alcoholic beverage and served up a bootful of Red Bull energy drink - the product that made the fortune of Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz and funded Ricciardo's Red Bull Racing F1 team. The race was Ricciardo's final podium appearance in 2016; he was classified in third place at the next race in Mexico, but gained the position several hours after the end of the race thanks to post-race penalties for both Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Ricciardo later said that if he'd been on the podium he would probably have tried to get the former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya (who conducted the interviews) to do the "shoey".

Waard is a type of fizzy rosewater drink that is sprayed in place of champagne at F1 races held in Bahrain.
7. Racegoers at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2017 witnessed the second time that Daniel Ricciardo managed to get a famous actor to do a "shoey" and drink from his sweaty race boot. Which star of both the 'Star Trek' and 'X-Men' film series got this opportunity when he performed the podium interviews at this race?

Answer: Sir Patrick Stewart

Sir Patrick Stewart appeared in four 'Star Trek' films as Captain Jean-Luc Picard between 1994 and 2002, continuing the role he played in the TV series 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', as well as starring in the 'X-Men' series as Professor Charles Xavier (aka Professor X). However, he is also a noted Shakespearean actor and his career on stage and in television career dates back to the 1960s.

The 2017 Canadian Grand Prix was won by Lewis Hamilton, with his team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, in second place. Daniel Ricciardo's third place saw the return of the "shoey" to the F1 podium and after partaking of one himself, it didn't take much for him to persuade Sir Patrick Stewart, the podium interviewer, to follow suit. Despite having had plenty of opportunities to take part in the tradition himself and having consistently refused to do so, Hamilton told Stewart "I'm proud of you for doing that". Patrick Stewart's previous racing experience with Lewis Hamilton consisted of being around 5 seconds a lap slower than him in a "reasonably priced car" on the BBC motoring show 'Top Gear'.

William Shatner played 'Star Trek's Captain Kirk, while Sir Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman both starred in the 'X-Men' series as Magneto and Wolverine respectively.
8. Which driver was only 18 years and 239 days old when he took third place at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix to claim the title of second-youngest podium finisher in F1 and break the record for youngest "shoey" drinker on a F1 podium?

Answer: Lance Stroll

Canadian Lance Stroll joined the Williams team at the start of the 2017 season and after coming in for some criticism for poor performances in the first few races, made a better impression by taking a well-deserved third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His third place would have been second, but he got overtaken on the final lap by Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas. Nevertheless, he set a new record for the second youngest driver to achieve a podium finish in F1 (after Max Verstappen) and claimed Williams' first podium for over a year. Prior to F1, the highlights of his motor racing career were winning the European F3 title in 2016 and the Toyota Racing Series in 2015.

Prior to Lance Stroll's close encounter with Daniel Ricciardo's shoe, the youngest "shoey" drinker on a F1 podium was Ricciardo's team-mate, Max Verstappen, who was 19 years and 2 days old when he took part in one at the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix.
9. Which English F1 commentator and former F1 driver actually requested a "shoey" from Daniel Ricciardo on the podium of the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix in order to raise money for charity?

Answer: Martin Brundle

During his F1 career, which lasted from 1984 to 1996, Martin Brundle stood on the podium nine times, although he never managed to win a race. After retiring as a driver, Brundle returned to the sport as a commentator alongside the legendary Murray Walker and then went on to develop a position as one of the sport's more respected pundits. He has also returned to the podium on numerous occasions to interview the top three drivers and at the Austrian Grand Prix in 2017 he used that opportunity to offer to take part in a "shoey" if third-placed Ricciardo would donate a couple of pairs of his race boots to be auctioned off for charity. Needless to say, Ricciardo accepted and Brundle became the latest to join the list of Ricciardo's "shoey" victims.

However, the next time Ricciardo offered Brundle a "shoey" (at the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix) he firmly declined it, saying that he "had been sick for six months" after his first experience!
10. At the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo took an unexpected victory after running sixth in the first part of the race in a car that had been hastily repaired just before qualifying. He celebrated by sharing a "shoey" on the podium with which of the following?

Answer: The Red Bull team member who collected the team's trophy

Daniel Ricciardo drove a stunning race to win the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix, making a series of astounding, yet controlled, overtakes on Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas to claim his first F1 win for over nine months. However, he had come within a few minutes of having to start the race from the back of the grid as his team of mechanics faced the almost impossible task of changing the Renault engine in his Red Bull after it failed in the final practice session, just a couple of hours before the start of qualifying. Given this close call, it was fitting that a member of the Red Bull crew was present on the podium to receive the team's winner's trophy and become the tenth person to do a "shoey" from one of Ricciardo's race boots.

Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the podium and neither showed any interest whatsoever in becoming number 11 on that list.
