He impressed many people, and he would be awarded his first Formula 1 start by season's end. Niki was a driver for all of these teams during his 13 year Formula 1 career, but his first team was March.

On the second lap of 1976 German Grand Prix, Lauda's car had a suspension failure. The car hit an embankment and rolled back on the track where was hit by another car. Lauda was trapped in the car while it busted into flames. A group of drivers were able to get Lauda out of the car.

Although Niki was able to walk right after the crash, his condition declined, and he fell into a coma and a priest administered the last rites. Lauda suffered extensive scarring from the burns, and he inhaled hot toxic gases that damaged his lungs and blood. Lauda surprisingly returned to racing six weeks later only missing two races. Niki went into the final race, still holding onto a slim point lead, but he did not finish the race, and he lost the championship to James Hunt by one point.

After joining the Brabham team his first win, the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, was surrounded with controversy. Brabham debuted a new car, the Brabham BT46B also known as the Fancar, which had a fan on the engine. The fan was claimed to just cool down the engine, but it actually gave the car a speed and handling advantage. Lauda would go on to win the race by 30 seconds over Riccardo Patrese.

After much protest, the team decided to remove the fan from the car from competing in future events. Shortly after this event, the use of a fan on an engine became illegal.

His other win was the 1978 Italian Grand Prix, the race during which Ronnie Peterson was fatally injured. Niki finished third in the race, but was awarded the win after Mario Andretti and Gilles Villeneuve were penalized for a jump start. Niki Lauda won the non-championship San Marino GP in September 1979.

The circuit at San Marino joined the F1 GP ranks in 1980.
