Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1981, Swedish driver Slim Borgudd drove his ATS to a sixth place finish at the British Grand Prix. Which Swedish icon was represented on his car?

Answer: ABBA

Borgudd was not only a racing driver, he was also a drummer who had played in The Hootenanny Singers, of which a fellow member was Bjorn Ulvaeus, who would go on to form ABBA. Borgudd drove a total of ten Grands Prix for ATS and Tyrell with his sixth place at Silverstone being his best finish and although ABBA were proudly displayed on the side pod of the car, it was a no cash sponsorship deal, in the hope of attracting a financial deal with another sponsor.

It seems that not only did Borgudd not make any "Money, Money, Money" on the deal, he couldn't persuade anyone else to "Take A Chance On Me" either.
2. Between 1985 and 1993, which name adorned the rear wing of the Williams car of world champions, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost?

Answer: Canon

Camera manufacturer Canon sponsored the English Football League from 1983 to 1986 and in 1985 also became the main sponsors of Williams F1.
With their name on the rear wing, Williams drivers roared to three drivers' championships and four constructors' titles with Nelson Piquet winning a total of seven races in 1986 and 1987, Nigel Mansell winning 13 between 1985 and 1987 and Alain Prost being victorious in seven races in 1993.
3. It is hard to picture the great Ayrton Senna without also seeing the word "Nacional", who were one of his sponsors. What were Nacional though?

Answer: Brazilian Bank

Ayrton Senna was a three-time F1 champion driving for McLaren, as well as being runner up twice. Senna's first season in the sport was 1984, when he drove for Toleman and he impressed so much he was quickly offered a seat for the 1985 season by Lotus. This was also the season that saw him first sponsored by Nacional, and they would continue to sponsor him until his death in 1994.
The Nacional name disappeared in 1995, when the bank was taken over by Unibanco which itself merged with Itau in 2009.
4. Remember the famous black and gold liveried JPS car of the 1980s, driven by the likes of Elio de Angelis and Ayrton Senna? Which team had this iconic livery?

Answer: Lotus

The famous JPS Lotus livery caught the eye of many a young F1 fan such as this one. Not only because it was such a stylish colour scheme but also due to the amount of TV time it got as drivers such as Elio de Angelis, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna were regularly in contention for the lead. JPS (John Player Special) was a cigarette brand manufactured by John Player at their Nottingham headquarters and was invented specifically for Lotus.

The sponsorship deal also meant that the team was rebranded JPS Lotus, allowing Lotus to skirt around the cigarette advertising regulations that were starting to come into force in some countries.
5. The Caterham F1 team of the 2010s was founded by Tony Fernandes. One of their sponsors was a London based football club, owned by Fernandes, but which was it?

Answer: Queens Park Rangers

Caterham raced in F1 from 2012 to 2014 and had AirAsia, General Electric and Airbus as their main sponsors. Running a Formula One team is an expensive business though and the team's secondary sponsors were made up of whoever was willing to give money to the team.
Larger interests included Visa, Pirelli and CNN but there were also deals with Russian petrochemical company Sibur and Queens Park Rangers, who were at the time a Premier League club, although struggling to maintain their position.
Caterham tried to keep their F1 dreams alive, raising funds by any means possible, including a crowd funding programme, which saw Kamui Kobayashi and Will Stevens at the 2014 Abu Dhabi event driving a car which included sponsorship from the Windmill Inn in Littleworth, West Sussex.
Sadly, the likes of Windmill Inn could not compete with multinational sponsors and Caterham were declared bankrupt in March 2015.
6. In 1976 the BBC refused to broadcast the Brands Hatch Race of Champions due to the sponsor emblazoned on the Surtees car of Alan Jones. Who was this sponsor deemed "totally unacceptable for family viewing"?

Answer: Durex Condoms

Although the Brands Hatch Race of Champions was a non-championship race, it was still looked forward to by F1 fans. It was a major disappointment therefore when the BBC decided that condoms were not family friendly and refused to broadcast the race unless Surtees covered up their sponsor.
The Durex Surtees was used by the team from 1976 to 1978, with drivers including Patrick Tambay, Vern Schuppan and Rupert Keegan, as well as Alan Jones who propelled the car to its best finish of fourth in the 1976 Japanese grand prix.
TV viewers got to see very little of the 1976 season though as Surtees stuck with their sponsor and the BBC refused to show them because of this. Following James Hunt being crowned champion and capturing the public's imagination though, the BBC seemed to realise they were missing out and showed selected races, which all featured the Durex car in 1977.
7. Which cigarette brand was the major sponsor of McLaren between 1974 and 1996?

Answer: Marlboro

When Philip Morris, the manufacturers of Marlboro cigarettes, ended the partnership in 1996, it was at the time the longest running sponsorship deal within F1. Marlboro moved on to Ferrari in 1997 as a major sponsor, having been involved with the team since 1973 and during the heady days of cigarette advertising in the sport, also sponsored BRM (1972-74), Dallara (1989-1992) and Footwork (1994). The famous Marlboro McLaren's saw James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost (three times) and Ayrton Senna (three times) all be crowned champions while other drivers of the car included Emerson Fittipaldi, Gilles Villeneuve, Keke Rosberg, Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard.
8. Between 1975 and 1977, adult magazine, "Penthouse" and Rizla cigarette papers were the major sponsors of which UK-based F1 team?

Answer: Hesketh

Hesketh only raced in F1 for six years, between 1973 and 1978, but what a fun time they had. Team owner Lord Hesketh loved motor racing and originally ran a Formula Three team with "Bubbles" Horsley driving for him. He progressed to F2 and employed a young James Hunt as his second driver and the team were very much the "playboy" team, with Rolls-Royces being used by all team members and champagne consumed at an alarming rate, no matter the result.
In 1973 Hesketh made the switch up to F1, running just one car, piloted by Hunt and by 1975, they were running two cars as the results came their way, courtesy of Hunt, and the team finished fourth in the constructors' championship, their most successful season.
The partnership with "Penthouse" and Rizla fitted the team's image to perfection and also allowed the team to run a livery of a scantily clad young lady holding a giant pack of Rizla's to cover her breasts.
9. Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot started the 1991 season as the drivers for Jordan. Which drinks brand was the main sponsor of the team?

Answer: 7Up

The 7Up Jordan was a memorable car because of its wonderful green and blue colour scheme but also because of the immense talent displayed by Bertrand Gachot. In his first ten races for the team, Gachot managed seven finishes, three of those in points scoring positions.
His season came to an abrupt halt however when he was sentenced to eighteen months in prison for aggravated assault and Eddie Jordan was forced to draft in a young kid called Michael Schumacher. Schumacher drove one race for the team, failed to finish but showed enough talent to be offered a contract by Benetton for the rest of the season.
The 1991 season was the only season of the 7Up sponsorship for Jordan as the two parted ways before the 1992 season, with the major sponsor role being taken over by Sasol, a South African energy company.
10. Yahoo! sponsored Renault and Alpine in the early 2020s but started life as an F1 sponsor in 2000 with another French team. Which team was this?

Answer: Prost

In 1997, Alain Prost bought the Ligier F1 team and rebranded it Prost Grand Prix. The team's early sponsors included PlayStation 2, Agfa film and Gauloises cigarettes and in 2000, these were joined by Yahoo!.
The drivers that year were the incredibly talented and exciting Jean Alesi and young German driver, Nick Heidfeld, who between them managed just 11 finishes from a possible 34.
The following season brought better fortune as Alesi finished 12 races, three of them in points-scoring positions and the drivers brought in to replace Heidfeld, who had moved to Sauber, finished eight races between them.
Yahoo! were gone after just one season though, and wouldn't return as a sponsor until 2020 when they started sponsoring Renault and when the team changed their name to that of Renault's sports car brand, Alpine, Yahoo! stuck with them for the 2021 season.
