Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player banged out the most home runs in the entire decade?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

This wasn't close. Rodriguez began the decade as a Seattle Mariner, then three seasons with the Rangers before joining the Yankees. He smacked 435 home runs in the decade, with a season-high of 57 in 2002. Alex won five batting titles in the decade. Pujols of the Cardinals hit 366 in the decade, and Ryan Howard played for only six seasons.
2. Only one pitcher in the decade would reach the 300-strikeout plateau in a season. Who was this pitcher that accomplished this three times in the 2000s?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Randy was with the Diamondbacks, and in 2000 struck out 347, then 372 in 2001, and finally 334 in 2002. Johnson won four strikeout crowns in the decade along with his three Cy Young awards. He also threw a Triple Crown in 2002. Randy announced his retirement on January 6, 2010.
3. By more than 10 games to their ruuner-up, which team would rather forget the worst team season record in baseball for the decade?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Although the Kansas City Royals won only 58 games in 2005, then 56 in 2006, the Tigers were horrible in 2003. Detroit could only muster 43 wins against 119 losses in the season. It was the worst showing since the 1962 Mets. The Tigers had no starting player bat .300, and no pitcher win in double figures. Pitcher Mike Maroth led the team with his nine wins, but also lost 21 in the process.

The Tiger management still kept manager Alan Trammell on for another two seasons.
4. Strangely enough, three players tied for the highest batting average in a season during the decade. They were Nomar Garciaparra, Ichiro Suzuki, and which Colorado Rockie?

Answer: Todd Helton

The others listed all retired before the decade began. Boston's Nomar, Seattle's Ichiro, and the Colorado Rockie all batted .372 to take a league batting crown in the decade. Joe Mauer of the Twins took bragging rights by winning three batting titles from 2006-2009.
5. After the retirement of the biggest thief in baseball, who would attempt to replace him by stealing the most bases in the decade?

Answer: Juan Pierre

Pierre played for four teams during the decade. He was a Rockie, Marlin, Cub, and Dodger. He stole a total of 459 bases with a season high of 65 in 2003. Lofton's heyday was in the 1990s. Crawford of the Rays stole 362, while Reyes of the Mets stole 301 in seven seasons.
6. Which team had the most fans total go through their turnstiles at home games during the 2000s decade?

Answer: Yankees

Yankee Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium brought in 34 million fans during the decade. The Yankee team saw seven postseasons and went to four World Series. The Dodgers and Dodger Stadium brought in 30.7 million, while the Giants' attendance was 28.7 million.
7. The Chicago White Sox blanked the Houston Astros four games to none in the 2005 World Series. Which team blanked their opponents in two different World Series in the decade?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The others didn't win any World Series in the decade. The Red Sox came away big in 2004 against the Cardinals to bring a close to the so-called curse. Three seasons later they were at it again, this time against the Rockies in a four games to none sweep.
8. Which player in the decade bagged the most season MVP awards?

Answer: Barry Bonds

Bonds won four MVPs, all with the Giants from 2001-2004. Rodriguez won one with the Rangers and two with the Yankees. Pujols bagged three of his own, all with the Cardinals. Johnson didn't win any, but did win three Cy Young awards.
9. Which manager tasted victory in the most games in regular season play during the decade?

Answer: Joe Torre

Torre was with the Yankees and the Dodgers in the decade. He won an amazing 952 games. LaRussa of the Cardinals was the runner-up with 775 wins. Piniella had the reins of the Mariners, Rays, and Cubs during the decade while winning 765 games. Francona managed for only seven seasons in the decade.
10. Which slugger had the most hits in the entire decade?

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki

Ichiro led the American League six times in hits for the Mariners, and had a total of 2030 hits. Pierre led the league twice for the Marlins and Cubs, and hit 1663. The other two listed were pitchers.
