Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first inning of the game, who might be on the receiving end of a little "chin music"?

Answer: the batter

Chin music is a colorful term for a pitch thrown high and inside, near the batter's chin. This pitch is also called "high heat" and a "purpose pitch", the purpose of which is to back the batter off the plate.
2. Top of the second, you hear the announcer talking about "the hot corner". On the baseball diamond what area is known as the hot corner?

Answer: third base

A third baseman must have quick reflexes because the ball gets to him so quickly. Brooks Robinson and Graig Nettles were examples of third basemen who mastered the hot corner.
3. In the third, one of the bleacher fans is overheard discussing "the tools of ignorance". What is he talking about?

Answer: catcher's gear

Most would agree that the position of catcher is the most physically demanding. Catchers are routinely hit with foul balls, bats, charging players coming into home. So, one who would choose to play this position puts on the tools of ignorance.
4. Fourth inning, all tied up. During a beer break, you hear a fan talking about that "can of corn" last inning. To what is she referring?

Answer: an easy fly ball out

Catching an easy pop fly is as easy as catching a can of corn.
5. It's the bottom of the fifth, a real pitcher's duel. How would you describe the "55 ft. curve ball" the set up man just threw?

Answer: a pitched ball in the dirt

The rubber (the slab) on the pitcher's mound is 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate so a 55 ft curve would end up in the dirt before reaching home plate. BTW, a set-up man is a relief pitcher who usually pitches 2-3 innings before the closer (the bullpen ace) comes into the game to close it out.
6. While watching the sixth on your pocket TV, you hear the color commentator use the term "splitter". What would she be talking about?

Answer: a type of pitch

A splitter is a pitch that moves both vertically and horizontally making it very tough to hit when properly thrown. BTW, there are usually 2-3 announcers in the booth - the play-by-play man and color man who adds background (color) to the play-by-play commentary.
7. After the seventh inning stretch, your best friend returns to his seat and tells you the home team is "hitting the interstate". Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Answer: a bad thing

If a player (or team) is "hitting the interstate" he's hitting less than a .200 average ( .195 = I-95, .170 = I-70) which won't keep you in the "bigs" for long. A batting average of .300 is the goal of every hitter. The seventh inning stretch is an old baseball tradition in which the fans stand up and, well, stretch.
8. It's the bottom of the eighth, all tied up. The Cracker Jack guy walks by talking about a "frozen rope". To what is the vendor referring?

Answer: a stinging line drive

A frozen rope is a hard hit ball, off the ground and traveling in a straight line, just like a frozen rope. A hard hit ball on the ground would be a "worm burner".
9. Last licks for the home team in the bottom of the ninth. The stands are abuzz about the "spitter". What's a spitter (not a splitter)?

Answer: an illegal pitch

It's illegal to apply any foreign substance to a baseball but that hasn't kept pitchers from trying to throw a spit ball. Gaylord Perry, a long-time pitching great, won a lot of games with just a bit of Vaseline on the inside of his belt or the bill of his cap. A spit ball slides out of the pitcher's hand and travels an erratic path toward the batter.
10. Who doesn't love an extra inning game here in the tenth? When the announcer for the Montreal Expos refers to the bullpen ace's "papillon", to what pitch does he refer?

Answer: a knuckleball

Papillon (like in the book title) is French for butterfly. The knuckler, or knuckleball, is thrown at a slow speed with as little rotation as possible, giving the appearance of a ball fluttering toward the batter like a butterfly. It's very difficult for the pitcher to control a knuckler so catchers wear oversized mitts when catching a knuckleball pitcher. Also, because of the control problem, knucklers are rarely bullpen aces.
