Blagoevgrad is the economic and cultural center of south-western Bulgaria (near the borders with Greece and The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). The American University in Bulgaria is located in the town.

Dimitar Berbatov won the award again the following year (7): 2002, 2004-05, 2007-08-09-10.

In 2002 Bayer Leverkusen finished runners-up behind Borrussia Dortmund even though they were 5 pts in front with three games -- they lost the next two and won their last game but lost the title by a point, as Borussia Dortmund won their last three games. Bayer then lost the final of the German Cup (3-2 vs. Schalke 04), and the final of the the UEFA Champions League (1-2 vs. Real Madrid). All three runners-up titles came over a period of 11 days:

Sat 11 May 2002 - German Cup Final (the DFB-Pokal)
Wed 15 May 2002 - UEFA Champions League Final.

Berbatov signed with Leverkusen in July 2000. His last play with the German club in Europe was against CSKA Sofia in September 2005. Leverkusen lost both legs of their UEFA Cup tie 0-1 home and away. His last game for the club was against in May 2006 against Hanover 96.

Coincidentally, Berbatov's began his career with CSKA Sofia in 1998, before he signed for Leverkusen in 2001.

Berbatov became the most expensive player the club has ever bought. He left four years later at the end of the 2012 season, to join Fulham.
