Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many National League pitchers in 2003, won more than 20 games in the season?

Answer: 1

Russ Ortiz was the only NL pitcher who reached this plateau. After 5 seasons with the Giants, he wore the Braves' uniform in 2003 and went 21-7. Mark Prior of the Cubs was the runner-up with a record of 18-6, and Woody Williams of the Cardinals went 18-9.
2. Who led the Major Leagues in 2003, by hitting 47 home runs?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

The others listed were pitchers. A-Rod hit 47 with the Rangers after hitting 57 in 2002, and 52 in 2001. After only his 10th season in the big leagues, his career total was 345 home runs.
3. In 2003, the Detroit Tigers carried the burden of being the worst team in the season. They finished it with a dismal 43-119 record. Who had the 2nd worst record in 2003?

Answer: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The Devil Rays ended their own dismal season with a record of 63-99. The others listed did better by at least 14 games. The Rays came off a 55 win season in 2002, and in their first 6 seasons in baseball beginning in 1998, they failed to win more than 69 games in a season.
4. Before the San Francisco Giants' loss in the playoffs in 2003 to the Florida Marlins, when was their last playoff appearance?

Answer: 2002

The Giants went to the World Series in 2002 against the California Angels, and lost the Series 4 games to 3.
5. How many Los Angeles Dodgers batted over .300 in 2003, including their substitutes?

Answer: 0

The Dodgers could not muster a .300 hitter in 2003. Brian Jordan who only appeared in only 66 games, led the club with a .299 average. Of the Dodger starters, Shawn Green led that bunch with a .280 average. Their loss of Eric Karros was the Cubs' gain. No Dodger pitcher could win 17 games in another dismal year either. Hideo Nomo went 16-13 to lead the Los Angeles club.
6. Which of the following teams failed to make the 2003 playoffs?

Answer: Anaheim Angels

After winning the big one in 2002, the Angels finished 2003 with an embarrassing 77-85 record. 2002 World Series runners up, San Francisco Giants, were knocked out by the Florida Marlins in the first round.
7. In what season did Lou Gehrig retire?

Answer: 1939

Lou played in only 8 games in his last season in 1939, after playing the full season the previous year. In his final season he went 4 for 28, with all singles and 1 RBI. The 'Iron Man' died at age 38 in 1941. He was already inducted into the Hall of Fame before his death.
8. What pitcher threw Don Zimmer to the ground, during a skirmish in the 2003 ALCS?

Answer: Pedro Martinez

The others listed did not make the playoffs in 2003. The squirmish began when the Red Sox Pedro Martinez and the Yankees' Roger Clemens decided to play the brush-back game with hitters. Zimmer took exception to a pitch, ran out to the mound (amongst their bench), and Martinez pushed (?) Don to the ground. Zimmer was fined.
9. Cal Ripken Jr. retired after the 2001 season. Who played 3rd base for the Orioles the following season?

Answer: Tony Batista

The others did not play for the Orioles. Batista was obtained from the Blue Jays in mid season 2001. In 2002, he smacked 31 home runs, along with 150 hits for Baltimore.
10. Of the Aaron brothers Hank and Tommie, who was the oldest?

Answer: Hank

Hank played for 23 seasons and hit 755 career home runs. Born on February 5, 1934, he was 5 years older than brother Tommie. The lesser known brother played for 7 seasons with the Braves.
