Brazilian midfielder Casemiro signed from Sao Paulo on 10 June. He had previously spent time on loan with Real's B team. Isco was the first major transfer of the summer for Real Madrid, arriving at the Bernabeu on 27 June. Rather ironically, Casemiro has arguably been a much greater success in the Spanish capital. On 11 July, Callejon left Madrid to sign for Napoli. Higuain did not leave Madrid until 27 July.

Incredibly, the third-tier club was able to achieve a 0-0 draw in its first leg match with Real in the round of 32. Madrid won the second leg 2-0 to advance to the next stage.

Against Osasuna in the round of 16, Real won both legs 2-0. Los Blancos won both legs against Espanyol in the quarter-finals, achieving solid 1-0 victories in both ties. In the semi-finals, Real Madrid defeated their city rivals Atletico Madrid 3-0 and 2-0. In the final, Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1.

Answer: Luka Modric

Atletico led after 36 minutes when Diego Godin headed the ball past Iker Casillas. Real wasted several chances in the second half, but finally got their big moment when a corner from the right by Modric was met by Ramos in the 93rd minute.

Ronaldo and Bale had been wasteful in normal time, but both scored in extra time as Atletico's resolve faded. Di Maria won man of the match in what was ultimately his last game in the famous white shirt before leaving for Manchester United in the following summer.

Madrid won the final 2-0 thanks to goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale. Cruz Azul also lost to Los Blancos during the tournament, falling 4-0 in the semi-finals after Ramos, Bale, Isco and Karim Benzema netted for Los Merengues.

Western Sydney Wanderers were eliminated by Cruz Azul 3-1 in the quarter-finals while ES Setif lost at the same stage to Auckland City.

Real's James Rodriguez was the recipient of the league's Best Midfielder award after an impressive debut season in Madrid. Barcelona's Claudio Bravo won the award for best goalkeeper. Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to the league title in 2014-15 and as a result he was awarded the Best Player and Best Forward titles.

Benitez won 17 out of his 25 games in charge of Real Madrid, drawing five games and losing three. Arguably his finest moment in charge was a 10-2 win over Rayo Vallecano in December 2015. Despite being considered a failure in Madrid, Benitez had a better winning percentage than more celebrated Real Madrid managers such as Vicente Del Bosque and Fabio Capello.

Zidane got off to a stunning start with the club, with Real defeating Deportivo 5-0 at the Bernabeu, courtesy of a brace from Benzema and a hat trick from Bale. Madrid followed this up in Zidane's second game with a 5-1 win against Sporting Gijon. Zidane faced Betis in his third league game in charge, with Los Merengues drawing 1-1.

A 2-2 draw with Valencia had previously led to Benitez' removal.

Vazquez took Real's first penalty in the shootout, with Marcelo going second and Bale third. All three penalty takers were successful with their efforts, as were Atleti's first three takers in Antoine Griezmann, Gabi and Saul Niguez. Sergio Ramos then made it 4-3 to Los Merengues before Juanfran missed his penalty. Ronaldo then scored to win Real the trophy. Benzema may have taken a penalty if he had still been on the pitch at the time, but Zidane had already substituted the Frenchman in the 77th minute for Vasquez.

Diaz was promoted to the first team on 20 August 2016 after Karim Benzema suffered a back injury. He had scored 32 goals in 44 league games for Castilla. Asensio was not an academy graduate at the Bernabeu and was signed from Mallorca in 2014. Llorente graduated from the B team in 2015 but was never able to establish himself in the Madrid first team. Vallejo joined Los Blancos from Real Zaragoza in 2015, but like Llorente has struggled to break into the first team.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the second minute with his 25th league goal of the season. Benzema scored ten minutes into the second half to put the game out of reach. Los Blancos ended the season with 93 points, three points ahead of Barcelona.

Radovic scored in both of Legia Warsaw's group games with Real Madrid, albeit one of them was a penalty in a 5-1 loss at the Bernabeu.

All of the other mentioned players scored once against Los Blancos. Cesar gave Sporting CP the lead at the Bernabeu in the first matchday, but Real scored two goals right at the end to deny the Portuguese side. Odjidja-Ofoe scored in Legia Warsaw's 3-3 draw at home against Real Madrid. Insigne scored in the first leg of Napoli's round of 16 clash with Real. The tie ended 6-2 on aggregate to the eventual champions.

Real Madrid retained the title four times in the competition's early years, with their original 1956 success followed by retention in 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. Benfica then retained in 1962 after first winning it in 1961. Inter Milan retained in 1965 and after winning in 1964. Ajax retained it twice during their "three peat" of 1971-72-73, as did Bayern when they achieved the same feat between 1974-75-76.

Liverpool retained the cup in 1978 after their 1977 success, as did Nottingham Forest in 1980 after their surprise 1979 win. AC Milan won in 1989 and retained it in 1990. Real Madrid would create the tournament's 15th successful defence in 2018 when they won the Champions League again.

Mariano was the first out of the door, joining Lyon on 30 June. Rodriguez joined Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal on 11 July, reuniting with his former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. Morata left the Bernabeu on 21 July, replacing Diego Costa at Chelsea. Two days after Morata's exit, Danilo left Los Blancos to link up with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

An often underrated player yet highly regarded by Zidane, Vazquez played 54 times for Real during the 2017-18 season. He was also the club's most used player in La Liga, making 34 appearances. Navas made 44 appearances, enough for joint-sixth most in the squad.

Kroos' 43 appearances and Carvajal's 41 appearances ranked only joint-10th and 14th overall, which is likely due to Zidane's decision to rotate the team in league games once the title became an unrealistic aim.

Sergio Ramos played a pivotal role in all four finals, scoring the last second equaliser in 2014 and captaining Los Blancos to the 2016, 2017 and 2018 triumphs. He even won Man of the Match for his gutsy performance in the 2016 final.

Luka Modric also played every minute of each final, with his clutch performances in the 2018 competition landing him with the Ballon d'Or award. Cristiano Ronaldo was an ever present as well, scoring the winning penalty in the 2016 shootout and scoring twice in the 2017 showpiece.
