Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to building the largest CFL stadium in the league in 1978, Commonwealth Stadium, where did the Eskimos play?

Answer: Clarke Stadium

With seating for 60,081 (expandable to 62,500 for playoffs), Commonwealth Stadium is the largest stadium in use *full time* in the CFL (as a team's home gorund) and one of the few major sports field in the country with natural grass. It was built in 1978 to replace the much smaller Clarke Stadium which had seats for 20,000. Clarke Stadium is directly beside Commonwealth and can be seen from the stands.

Note on capacities: Legion Field in Birmingham AL (the Barracudas played one season in 1995), with a stadium capacity of over 80,000, was the largest capacity field in CFL history although the stadium never held more than 35,000 for a CFL game. Olympic Stadium in Montreal has a capacity of 65,255 but is only used for playoff games, by the Montreal Alouettes.
2. What are the names of the Eskimos' mascots?

Answer: Nanook and Punter

Nanook (Inuit for polar bear) is of course a polar bear, punter is a football.
3. With which team do the Eskimos meet up with for the Labour day classic series each year?

Answer: Calgary Stampeders

Fueling the battle of Alberta rivalry, the teams have played each other in Calgary on every Labour day since 1985, and at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton 4 days later.
4. In what year was the Edmonton Eskimos football organization founded?

Answer: 1949

The Edmonton Eskimos were founded in 1949. Other teams named the Edmonton Eskimos existed from 1895 to 1923, and 1929 to 1939.
5. Which of the following players has NOT been honored by having his jersey hung on the Wall of Fame.

Answer: Mike Pringle - #34

The wall of fame is the concrete divider that separates the first and second level of the stadium.
6. What is the next line in this cheer? We're cheering fight fight fight on Eskimos...

Answer: We're marching right right right on Eskimos

The fight song, played every game in the third quarter:
We're cheering fight fight fight on eskimos
We're marching right right right on eskimos
We're charging down the field for all to see
and shouting rah rah rah, Fight on to victory
We're fighting on 'til every game is won
The green and gold is bold and when we're done
We'll tell the world we're proud of Edmonton
And the EDMONTON ESKIMOS! ! !
7. What is the origin of the Eskimo's uniforms?

Answer: They were "hand-me-downs" from the University of Alberta

The uniform colours, green and gold, were adopted when the Eskimos received uniforms from the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team, which was dormant due to a lack of competition in 1949. The colours have remained since that time, and the Golden Bears maintained them as well.
8. If you're at an Edmonton home game you will hear a the following phrase when the Eskimos score: "That's another football into the endzone for..." What does the crowd yell back at the announcer?

Answer: ... high school football!

Al Stafford's time-honoured phrase yelled by Commonwealth Stadium after every Eskimo score. High school students then throw mini footballs throughout the stadium.
9. When the Eskimos won the Grey Cup in 2005 it was their ____ league championship.

Answer: 13th

Their win in 2005 was their 13th Grey Cups, the most championships won by any team since Edmonton entered the league in 1949. During the same time frame Hamilton Tiger-Cats were second best with 8 titles.

Toronto Argonauts won it the year before to make it their 7th title since 1949, but they also won 8 titles prior to the arrival of the green and gold in 1949 (i.e. their win in 2004 was their 15th championship).

Edmonton won 5 Grey Cups in a row 1978-79-80-81-82 and three in a row 1954-55-56. Between 1949 and 2005 a few teams managed to win back-to-back titles, but no team won more than twice consecutively other than Edmonton.
10. After missing the playoffs in 2006, Edmonton's streak of consecutive years making the playoffs finally came to an end. How many years had the Eskimos been to the post season prior to the streak ending?

Answer: 34

From 1972 to 2005, the Eskimos made the playoffs every year for 34 consecutive years. This includes 10 Grey Cup wins in 17 appearances... Amazing!

10 wins: 1975, 1978-82, 1987, 1993, 2003 and 2005.
7 losses: 1973-74, 1977, 1986, 1990, 1996 and 2002.
