Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first pitcher in history to save 100 games in his career?

Answer: Firpo Marberry

Marberry threw 13 of his 14 seasons with the Senators and Tigers. He started as many games as he came on in relief. He led the league five times with most saves. His 100th save came in 1935 with the Tigers. He threw one more in 1936, then retired.
2. Who won a batting title in three different decades?

Answer: George Brett

Brett played all his 21 seasons with Kansas City from 1973-1993. His batting titles came in 1976, 1980, and 1990. He was the first player to win the title in three different decades. In 1990, he won the title by hitting .329, just .004 over Rickey Henderson of the Athletics. George was a 1999 Hall of Fame inductee with 98% of the vote. Nolan Ryan was also inducted in 1999 with 99% of the vote.
3. Nels Potter was the first pitcher in history to be ejected for throwing a spitball. Which team did he play on when he threw the wet ball?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

On July 20, 1944, Potter entered the history books with this dubious honor. He did the deed against the New York Yankees. Potter threw from the mound from 1936-1949. Gaylord Perry, the king of spitters was born in 1938. Any coincidence?
4. Which of the following managed for the most consecutive years in Major League baseball?

Answer: Sparky Anderson

Connie Mack set an unreachable record by managing for 53 seasons, three with Pittsburgh and 50 consecutive with the Athletics. Sparky began his managerial career 11 seasons after his only season as a player. In 1959, Anderson hit .218 with the Phillies.

In 1970, as a managerial rookie, he began a string of 24 consecutive seasons, and took the Cincinnati Reds to the National League pennant. He did it again in 1972, then won the World Series in 1975 and 1976 with the Big Red Machine. After the 1978 season and nine years in Cincinnati, Sparky packed his bags and moved to Detroit, where he helmed the Tigers for another 17 years.

He won the series as a Tiger in 1974. George Lee Anderson was a 2000 Hall of Fame inductee.
5. I was the last pitcher in the 19th century to win 40 games in a season, two seasons in a row. Nobody duplicated this throughout the entire 20th century. This feat makes me special. Who am I?

Answer: Bill Hutchinson

Cy Young never won 40 games in a season. In 1890 and 1891, Hutchinson went 42-25 and 44-19 respectively with the Chicago White Stockings of the National League. The following season he went 36-36 in a tiring 70 starts. In those three seasons, he led the league in wins each time. In only seven full seasons, Bill won 183 games. He retired in 1897 as a St. Louis Brown.
6. The 2000 World Series was a subway series against the Yankees and Mets. When was the last New York subway series prior to that?

Answer: 1956

44 seasons back, the series pitted the Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers, which the Yankee club won four games to three. There were 14 subway series in the 20th century, then they seemed to almost stop. One reason for this was that two powerhouse New York teams, the Giants and Dodgers, moved to the west coast.
7. Which of the following played Major League baseball, then later in the NFL won a Super Bowl?

Answer: Tom Brown

Brown played in only season for his Major League career. It was the 1963 Washington Senators, and who finished in last place with a 56-106 record. He had one career home run to his credit. But, Brown had no motivation to continue pursuing baseball. In 1966, Tom was part of the first Super Bowl with his Green Bay Packers.
8. Which team set a record for winning their league/division by 22 games ahead of the second-best team in the league?

Answer: New York Yankees

In 1998, the Yankees set an American League record by winning 114 games in the season (later broke by the Mariners in 2001). The Boston Red Sox had the second-best record in the American League, but unfortunately were also in the Yankees' East Division.

The Red Sox finished the season with 92 wins but still finished 22 games behind. The Yankees went on to the World Series, four games to none against the Padres.
9. Which team set a Major League record for hitting only three home runs in an entire season?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

A National League record was set by the 1917 Pittsburgh Pirates when they hit only seven. The Major League record which still existed in 2005, was set by the 1908 Chicago White Sox. Only two years after upsetting the Chicago Cubs and winning the World Series, the White Sox could only smack three in the season.

Although a dismal show of power, the White Sox still finished third in the American League. The home runs were hit by Fielder Jones, Frank Isbell, and pitcher Ed Walsh. The following season the White Sox hit only four.

In five seasons from 1906-1910, Chicago hit only 26 home runs. In the same time frame, the Philadelphia Athletics hit 115.
10. Who was the first second baseman in history to hit 20 home runs, 200 hits, 100 RBIs, bat over .300 in a season, and do this all in two consecutive seasons?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Hornsby of the St. Louis Cardinals would display his power in the 1921 and 1922 season. He hit .401 in addition to topping all those marks. Baerga was the second to match this well-balanced feat. Carlos topped all those marks in the 1992 and 1993 season with the Cleveland Indians.
