Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. England didn't enter the first three World Cups, but succeeded in qualifying for Brazil 1950, the first World Cup after World War II. Who was in their group?

Answer: Chile, Spain, and USA

England beat Chile 2-0, but lost 1-0 to the USA and Spain. They came second in their group behind Spain, but only one team from each group could qualify for the final round.
2. In which World Cup apart from 1966, did England progress furthest?

Answer: Italy 1990

England came fourth in 1990, losing a penalty shootout against West Germany in the semi-finals, and then being beaten 2-1 by the hosts Italy in the playoff. They reached the quarterfinals in the other World Cups mentioned (although Mexico 1970 didn't have a top 16 round, unlike the other two).
3. In which of the following World Cups were England NOT eliminated by a penalty shootout?

Answer: Mexico 1970

In Mexico 1970, England were beaten 3-2 by West Germany after extra time. They lost penalty shootouts against West Germany in Italy 1990, Argentina in France 1998, and Portugal in Germany 2006.
4. Who was the first England player to have won the Golden Boot, for the most goals scored in the tournament?

Answer: Gary Lineker

In Mexico 1986, Gary Lineker scored six goals, three against Poland in the final group match, two against Paraguay in the second round, and one against Argentina in the quarterfinals.
5. The 1958 World Cup in Sweden was the first World Cup in which all four home nations in the United Kingdom qualified, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Out of these four, England progressed furthest.

Answer: False

Both England and Scotland went out at the group stage. England drew 2-2 with USSR, 0-0 with Brazil, and 2-2 with Austria. They were left equal with the USSR within the group, so a playoff between the two was played and USSR won 1-0.

Wales and Northern Ireland both made it to the quarterfinals, where Northern Ireland lost 4-0 to France, and Wales lost 1-0 to Brazil, the eventual winners.
6. Of course, the 1966 World Cup was the one that England fans look back on most proudly, the tournament that England both hosted, and won. Which of the following teams did England NOT play against on the road to winning the Cup?

Answer: Hungary

England met Mexico and France in the group stage, and beat them both 2-0. They beat Portugal 2-1 in the semi-finals.
7. England player Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the 1966 final against West Germany, and was the first player ever to do so in a World Cup final.

Answer: True

Hurst's first goal was in the 18th minute, and his next two both came in extra time (after 90 minutes, the score was 2-2). First came his controversial goal where the ball hit the crossbar and came down vertically, whether or not it crossed the goal line remains debatable, but the linesman believed it had, and gave the goal. Just before the end, he scored his third, prompting commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme to say (as some spectators ran onto the pitch at the same time), "They think it's all over, it is now!"
8. England were the defending champions in Mexico 1970, and in their second group match, they faced the 1958 and 1962 winners, Brazil. Ten minutes into the match, one of the Brazilians headed the ball at the goal, and goalkeeper Gordon Banks was forced to throw himself backwards and to the side to reach it, but he succeeded in deflecting the ball with his hand in what was widely regarded as one of the greatest saves ever. Which Brazilian player made that particular attempt on goal?

Answer: Pele

Despite Banks' efforts, Brazil won 1-0 from a goal scored by Jairzinho in the 60th minute. England still qualified for the quarterfinals, but unfortunately Banks came down with food poisoning and couldn't play in the quarterfinal match against West Germany.
9. In France 1998, one of the substitutes in the England squad was an 18-year old who was the youngest player to represent England in the 20th century. In England's second group game against Romania, he was brought off the bench and scored a goal seven minutes later. He was included in the starting lineup for England's top 16 match against Argentina, and in the 16th minute, he ran with the ball from the halfway line, dodged two Argentinians and scored a highly praised goal. Who was this young player?

Answer: Michael Owen

England ultimately lost the match against Argentina in a penalty shootout, but Owen was named BBC Sports Personality Of The Year in 1998. He went on to play for England in the 2000 and 2004 European Championships, and the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He scored goals in all of those except the 2006 World Cup, not fully fit after earlier injuries, he suffered a knee injury less than two minutes into the final group game against Sweden, and had to go home early.
10. In the 2002 World Cup held in Japan and South Korea, England got revenge on Argentina for beating them in the 1986 and 1998 tournaments. They met in the group stage, and England won 1-0, but how was that single goal scored?

Answer: A penalty by David Beckham

It was also personal revenge for England captain David Beckham, who had been sent off in the 1998 match against Argentina. With a win and two draws, England qualified from the group stage, and with a win, a draw and a loss, Argentina didn't.
