Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. England captain Alistair Cook and his New Zealand counterpart Brendon McCullum strode out to the wicket on the morning of May 21st 2015 for the opening test of the English summer. They then flipped a coin to see who would have the opportunity to decide the start of the test. Who won the toss?

Answer: New Zealand, chose to field

Traditionally, the English captain flips the coin and the opposition captain calls. On this morning McCullum called heads and was successful. Much against the experts' thinking (Commentator Geoffrey Boycott) this was a mistake on McCullum's part. McCullum made this call because he felt that the pitch was suitable to bowl on first due to a greenish wicket.
2. Cook, an opener, came to the crease with one of the two England debutants. The other opener scored 7 runs before being caught by Watling off the bowling of Southee. Who was the debutant opener?

Answer: Adam Lyth

Lyth, Wood and Kiwi Henry made their test debuts at Lords. Trent Boult had made his debut in 2011 v Australia.

Lyth had a tough first test losing both his wickets for low scores: 7 and 12. On both occasions he was caught: off paceman Tim Southee in the first innings and then off the bowling of Boult in the second. Ironically Southee took this catch.

Wood also making his test debut for England scored 8 and 4 runs, both not out. In contrast Wood as a bowler took 3-93 and 1-47 respectively.

Henry, also a bowler, had a respectable start to his test career taking 4-93 and 2-106 whilst scoring 10 in both innings.
3. An incredible opening spell of bowling from NZ saw England in total disarray in the first hour. Can you recall the score when Ben Stokes came to the crease?

Answer: 30-4

Indeed England were blown away with some sensational bowling by the NZ attack.

Lyth c. Watling b. Southee 7
Cook c. Watling b. Henry 16
Ballance c. Southee b. Boult 1
Bell b. Henry 1
4. A recovery for England was vital and this is exactly what happened. The fifth wicket stand was 161. Who accompanied Stokes on this rebuilding mission?

Answer: Joe Root

Both Root (98) and Stokes (92) fell agonisingly short of Lords' centuries. Thw Crowd witnessed some beautiful stroke play from the pair during their combined innings. The occasion was set for both to kick on, but sadly for the duo, they fell to two great deliveries. Stokes was first to go when after hitting 92 off 94 balls in little over 2 hours.

He was bowled by a ripping delivery from Mark Craig. In contrast, Root was slow in his run scoring hitting 98 off 161 balls in four hours when he was caught by Tom Latham off the bowling of Henry.
5. New Zealand were certainly on a high after taking England to 251-6. However the home side had another big partnership of 103 for the seventh wicket. Which two players established this knock?

Answer: Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali

Buttler and Ali battled hard for nigh on two hours in which time the Kiwis were held in check with some lovely stroke play.

Buttler was out for 67 when bowled LBW by Trent Boult. The same bowler also dismissed Ali when Latham took one of his six catches in the match.
6. The tail never seems to wag for England and on this occasion it didn't to do much to argue the case with the last four wickets falling for how many runs?

Answer: 45

After the dismissal of Buttler, England struggled. This seemed to be similar to recent tests. Only 45 runs were added to the score for the last four wickets, leaving England all out for 389.

Stuart Broad was out for 3 with Latham and Boult once again working together to take a wicket. Wood remained not out 8, whilst Jimmy Anderson was caught and bowled by Henry for 11.
7. With the England innings over early on the second day, which two New Zealanders opened the batting scoring a fantastic partnership of 148?

Answer: Guptill and Latham

Both Kiwi openers showed sublime skills when batting for an impressive two and half hours. Alas, the partnership was broken up when Gary Ballance caught Latham off the bowling of Broad for 70. Then in the very next over Moeen Ali bowled Guptill LBW for 59, leaving NZ 148-2.
8. After England had dismissed the two openers for 148, they set about trying to take further wickets, but which pair then continued the onslaught by scoring a further 189 for the fourth wicket?

Answer: Williamson and Taylor

Kane Williamson plundered the English attack with a scintillating 132 off 262 balls lasting well over six hours at the crease. He hit 15 fours whilst his partner Ross Taylor hit a fine 62 off 135 balls. Williamson was eventually caught by Ballance and bowled by Moeen Ali with the score 470-6. Taylor went earlier, caught Buttler, bowled Broad with the score 337-3.
9. New Zealand managed to score an impressive 523 all out, a lead of 134. However, despite one centurion and three other players scoring fifties, extras or sundries accounted for the third highest total on the card. How many did England give away in total?

Answer: 67 (1nb 6w 26b 34lb )

England's bowling figures were pretty damaging and the 67 extras/sundries accounted for the third highest score on the NZ card.
Williamson scored 132, Guptill 70, Extras/sundries 67, Taylor 62, Watling 61no and Latham 59.

England wicket keeper Buttler often had a red face after making some poor decisions behind the stumps, resulting in the many byes and leg byes.
10. As with the first innings, England got off to a dire start, losing their first two wickets for just 25 on the board. Which New Zealand bowler took the scalp of Lyth?

Answer: Trent Boult

England were in disarray and in danger of being blown away once Lyth and Ballance had departed the scene. First Lyth was caught Southee for 12, then Ballance went for a duck after facing 12 balls before Southee clean bowled him.
11. Ian Bell departed with England 75-3 and in real danger of collapsing. Which New Zealand pair combined to dismiss him for 29?

Answer: Latham and Southee

Bell had started quite brightly and played some lovely strokes. Alas for England he didn't last anymore than just over an hour before his dismissal.
12. Captain Cook was about to embark on a fantastic innings that would see him bat the best part of a whole days play, 540 minutes in total to be precise. How many runs did the England skipper score ensuring that the England total was a competitive one?

Answer: 162

Cook saw six of his team mates depart the crease before he was caught Latham bowled Boult for 162 fantastic runs.
When Cook was dismissed England sat at 455-7, a lead of 321 runs.
13. After the dismissal of Cook, England held a healthy lead of 321. As with recent test matches, a batting collapse ensued as New Zealand ripped through the tail. What was England's final total?

Answer: 478

A lead was imperative for England and they had left themselves little over three sessions to try and win the test match. This seemed, at times, impossible after being 30-4 in the first innings and 75-3 in the second. However, a very strong batting performance by England led to a lead of 344.
14. New Zealand were set a very big target, which needed an opening partnership similar to that of the first innings. However, the worst possible start came to light when, with only two balls delivered Guptill edged one to Gary Ballance for 0 The Kiwis were 0-1. Which English bowler took the wicket?

Answer: Jimmy Anderson

Jimmy Anderson took his 399th test wicket with this delivery. Earlier in the year during the West Indies tour, Jimmy had broken Sir Ian Botham's nigh on 30 year record of test wickets for England. It was this wicket that took Jimmy to the brink of being the first English bowler to surpass 400 test wickets.
15. Disaster struck once more with only the seventh ball of the innings. New Zealand lost their second wicket with no addition to the score. Which NZ batsman fell to which English bowler when bowled LBW?

Answer: Latham/Broad

An absolute beauty of a delivery by Stuart Broad with his first ball of the innings was smashed into Latham's pads. Suddenly, the momentum had swung dramatically in favour of England.
16. New Zealand were now in complete disarray and the wickets continued to tumble. With 12 on the board it now became 12-3 but most vitally for New Zealand they now had to bat out 80 overs to save the test. After the third wicket fell, how many overs were left to face?

Answer: 74.3

After just 5.3 overs, three wickets were down. That meant that New Zealand needed to bat out 74.3 overs to save the match. However, it still didn't mean it was out of the realms of possibility that they could score the 333 still required to win the match just as long as the wickets stopped falling.
Ross Taylor was the third man out, once again succumbing to LBW from Broad. He scored eight runs.
17. The Lords' crowd was in absolute ecstasy and could smell a victory for England. However, NZ were certainly not going to go down without a fight and the fourth wicket partnership suggested a dog fight would occur. Once the partnership had reached 61 calamity struck and the fourth man, Williamson was on his way back to the pavilion after scoring 27. Which English bowler snaffled this all important wicket?

Answer: Ben Stokes

Stokes bowled a jaffer that was caught by Root at third slip sending England into absolute delirium. First innings hero Williamson just could not keep his bat away from the delivery and paid the price.
18. The very next delivery saw England snaffle a sensational wicket when the bowler ripped the stumps out of the ground to send which Kiwi batsmen back to the pavilion with NZ 61-5?

Answer: McCullum

It was reported that if there was a roof on Lords it would have been sent into outer space with the incredible noise created by the crowd of over 20,000 witnessing the most incredible delivery by Ben Stokes. McCullum, who was famed for huge hitting, just mistimed the stroke and gently brushed the delivery on to his stumps. At this point England smelt blood with 76 overs to go.
19. The game was now at a point that no one in the ground could have envisaged 24 hours earlier. New Zealand now had to dig in for 66 overs when BJ Watling shared a century partnership with which other NZ middle order batsman?

Answer: Corey Anderson

Both Watling and Anderson shared a stand of 108 but most importantly chipped 27 overs off the bowling quota. Eventually Watling went for 59 when he tickled a demon delivery into the gloves of Jos Buttler off the bowling of Mark Wood. Anderson was out four overs later with the score now reading 174-7.

He had added 67 before falling LBW to Joe Root. The third umpire opheld the initial decision by umpire S Ravi which looked as if the ball was drifting down leg. The umpires during the test were Erasmus from South Africa and Ravi from India. Third umpire was RJ Tucker from Australia and the match referee was Boon from Australia.
20. With the match firmly in the hands of England it seemed a matter of time before the match would be wrapped up, however, NZ battled hard and wickets were difficult to come by for England. With just eight overs remaining and NZ 220-9 England struck taking the final wicket and winning the test match by how many runs?

Answer: 124

The last few wickets fell cheaply with 46 runs added after the dismissal of Corey Anderson. Tim Southee scored a quick fire 20 but threw his wicket away. It left the final pair to see off the remaining overs, which in theory, they had little hope of ever achieving.

Boult uppercut a short ball by Broad to Ali who was at third man. He took the catch, diving full length. Ali did brilliantly well, he was running back to his left, and took it in his left, managing to cling to the ball as he fell to the ground. England won by 124 runs and went 1-0 up in the series.
21. A truly incredible test match that will live in the memory of fans for many years. Records tumbled and one in particular was the overall combined runs total. What was significant about this?

Answer: Over 1600 runs were scored for the first time at Lords in a Test

1610 runs scored for the entire Test, which is the highest ever in a Lords' Test. It's also the highest since 1930 for a Test in which all 40 wickets have fallen. In the entire history of Test cricket, it's fifth highest total when all 40 wickets have fallen.
The all time record between both sides at Lords is now 8-1 in England's favour. The only time NZ have won was in 1999.
22. New Zealand lost this test despite scoring 523 in their first innings, thereby joining a select number of teams who have scored 500 in a first innings but lost outright. Their previous highest score 433 yet losing outright was against whom in Christchurch 2005?

Answer: Australia

523 runs were scored in New Zealand's first innings total, which is easily their highest in a Test in which they have ended up losing. Their previous highest in a defeat was 433, against Australia in Christchurch in 2005.
Their first innings at Lords in 2015, was only the 14th instance in Test history where a team lost after scoring 500-plus in their first innings. Of the fourteen. there have been four against England.
23. During the second England innings, an English-post war record was created at Lords when Ben Stokes smashed a fantastic century off how many balls?

Answer: 85

It took 85 balls by Ben Stokes to score his second Test hundred. It is the fastest in a Lord's Test, beating Mohammad Azharuddin's previous record of 87 balls in 1990. It's also the second-fastest ever for England in Tests (in matches where balls-faced data was recorded).

The only quicker hundred was by Gilbert Jessop in 1902, who scored a century off 76 balls against Australia at The Oval.
