Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which England batsman scored his maiden Test double century in this series?

Answer: Joe Root

Root made 200 not out in the 1st Test at Lord's. It followed Root's 180 against Australia at the same venue in the previous summer.
2. Which Australian-born cricketer made his Test debut in this series for England, along with Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan?

Answer: Sam Robson

New South Welshman Sam Robson made his Test debut for England in the 1st Test at Lord's. After failing to impress on debut, Robson scored 127 in the 2nd Test in Headingly.
3. Which batsman surpassed 50 in all four of his innings in the series?

Answer: Kumar Sangakkara

Sangakkara made scores of 147, 61, 79 and 55 in the series. His aggregate of 342 runs was the highest by any batsman in the series.
4. Which batsman batted for over three-and-a-half hours on the final day to help Sri Lanka save the 1st Test?

Answer: Kumar Sangakkara

Sangakkara batted for 218 minutes (and scored 61 runs) as Sri Lanka limped to the finish line nine wickets down.
5. Which player's 55-ball duck brought England to the verge of an unlikely draw in the 2nd Test in Headingly?

Answer: James Anderson

Anderson's innings was the second-longest for a score of zero in the history of Test cricket (well short of New Zealander Geoff Allott's 77-ball duck against South Africa in 1999, which lasted 101 minutes). Anderson came to the crease with England nine wickets down and more than 20 overs left on the final day.

He proceeded to bat for 81 minutes, before being caught at bat-pad to hand Sri Lanka victory (with just 1 ball to spare!) by 100 runs. A distraught Anderson slumped to his knees, and later broke down in tears during the post-match presentation while accepting the "Player of the Series" award.
6. Which England bowler took 5 for 64 in the 1st innings of the 2nd Test, as Sri Lanka slumped to 257 all out?

Answer: Liam Plunkett

It was Plunkett's maiden Test 5-wicket haul. He finished with match figures of 9 for 176.
7. In the 2nd Test, England reached an imposing 311 for 3 in reply to Sri Lanka's 257 all out, before Shaminda Eranga and which other bowler revived Sri Lanka?

Answer: Angelo Mathews

Mathews' figures of 4 for 44 included the wickets of Joe Root and Gary Ballance. Eranga took 4 for 93.
8. After Sri Lanka slumped to 277 for 7 in the 2nd Innings of the 2nd Test, which Sri Lanka batsman combined with Rangana Herath to put on 149 for the 8th wicket to give Sri Lanka a match-winning lead?

Answer: Angelo Mathews

Mathews was eventually dismissed for 160, by which time Sri Lanka had accumulated an overall lead of 328 runs (they had lead by just 169 at the fall of the 7th wicket).
9. Chasing an improbable 350 runs for victory in the 2nd Test, England survived the new ball, before which little-known Sri Lanka paceman took four wickets in a devastating spell of swing bowling to leave England reeling at 57 for 5 at the close of the fourth day?

Answer: Dhammika Prasad

After England had comfortably negotiated Sri Lanka's new ball pair of Pradeep and Eranga, Prasad ripped through their top 4 in just five overs. To add insult to injury, Rangana Herath then claimed night-watchman Liam Plunkett to leave England 5-down over night. On the final day, Prasad completed his first Test five wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 50.
10. How many Test series had Sri Lanka won in England prior to the 2014 series?

Answer: 0

The 2014 series was only Sri Lanka's fourth Test series in England, and their first win (although, they had drawn a 3-Test series on their 2006 tour of England 1-1). Prior to the 2000s, the England and Wales Cricket Board ("ECB") had only offered Sri Lanka one-off Tests in England. Sri Lanka had won the last of these in 1998, prompting the ECB to invite Sri Lanka for a full series in 2002.
The previous test series in England were: May 2002, May 2006 and June 2011.
