Answer: Football League Championship

Colchester United won promotion to the Championship for the first time in their history in 2005-06 after finishing second in League One. Their home of Layer Road had the smallest attendance of all teams in the Championship in 2007-08. Hull City had established themselves in the Championship by the season of 2007-08, despite flirting with relegation the two previous seasons.
Scunthorpe United were enjoying their first season in the Championship after an absence of 40 years.

Two mighty clubs had fallen by 2007-08. One-time European champions Nottingham Forest became the first ex-European Cup winners to fall to their national third division with their relegation to League One in 2005. Despite confidence of returning to the Championship, Forest had found League One football far harder and more competitive than expected. Leeds United fall from grace has been well documented, as their financial woes blasted across sports tabloids throughout England. Leeds were relegated to League One at the end of 2006-07, despite playing Champions League football only six years previous. Luton Town were also relegated from the Championship at the end of 2006-07, and had fallen into administration during 2007-08.

Torquay United were only relegated in 2006-07, generally due to mis-management of the club and its finances. Oxford United were the first club to have won a League Trophy (the League Cup in 1986) to play in the Conference, when they were relegated in 2006. Rushden and Diamonds were only formed in 1992 due to a merger of two clubs.

They won promotion to the League in 2001 and went as far as League One, but quickly dropped back to non-League football in 2006.

The Northern Premier League, also known the UniBond League, is tier seven of the English football league system. The league winners and playoff winners go into the Blue Square North, the teams relegated go down to Division One North or Division One South.

Also known as the Ryman League due to sponsorship reasons, the Isthmian League is at the seventh tier of the English football system, and is based for clubs in London and the south-east of the country. One club, AFC Wimbledon, is well known and supported, having been formed after the old club of Wimbledon FC was moved to Milton Keynes.

The Northern Premier Division One south is the eighth tier of the English football system. Sheffield FC is recognised by FIFA as the oldest football club in the world, having been founded in 1857. They have not had any notable success for over 130 years, but were awarded the FIFA Order of Merit (in 2004) and share close links with Real Madrid (who also received the FIFA award). To celebrate their 150th anniversary, the mighty Inter from Italy was invited to play, and over 18,000 supporters came to Bramall Lane to watch Inter win 5-2.

Answer: Blue Square South

All three clubs play in the Blue Square South division, one league below the Blue Square Premier League, so are at the sixth level of English football (the second tier of non-league). Sutton United's biggest claim to fame is beating old First Division club Coventry City in the FA Cup in 1989, one of only a few non-league clubs to beat top-league opposition. Hayes & Yeading were an amalgamation of Hayes FC and Yeading FC during 2007. Neither club had prolific non-league success and were merged primarily due to financial concerns. Hayes were originally to be relegated before the merger, but then Farnborough Town FC went out of business, so Hayes would have survived on their own, but the merger went ahead anyway.

All three clubs were promoted from the Football League Championship at the end of the 2006-07 season into the FA Premier League. Sunderland was promoted as Football League champions, Birmingham City as runners-up, and Derby County as victors through the playoffs.

Like the Blue Square South, the Blue Square North division was only formed in 2004 when the non-league structure of the English football system was overhauled yet again. AFC Telford was only formed in 2004 after Telford United went into liquidation, and the new club had carried on the legacy of Telford United as it was formed by the Telford United Supporters Trust.

FC United of Manchester are arguably one of the most famous non-league clubs in England, being a direct breakway from Manchester United by fans who were unhappy by the takeover of the club by the Glazer family in 2005. The club was instantly successful, winning the North-West Counties Division Two then Division One titles in successive years. Harrogate Railway featured on TV in 2007 in the second round of the FA Cup on BBC when they lost a closely fought match 3-2 to Mansfield Town. Lancaster City have carried on the tradition of the previous team to carry the name, despite Lancaster AFC going into liquidation in the middle of 2007.
