Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the first Charity Shield take place?

Answer: 1908

The Football League champions Manchester United (the professional team) played the Southern League champions Queens Park Rangers (the amateur team) in the 1908 Charity Shield. After a 1-1 draw, Man Utd went on to win 4-0 in the replay.
2. When was the Shield shared for the first time?

Answer: 1949

In 1949 Wolverhampton Wanderers (FA Cup winners) drew 1-1 with Portsmouth (League Champions).
3. Who took part in the 1974 Charity Shield?

Answer: Liverpool and Leeds United

This was Wembley's first Charity Shield (the annual curtain raiser was usually played at the home ground of one of the teams, or a neutral venue), and the first Charity Shield televised live. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, and Liverpool (FA Cup winners) beat Leeds United (the League Champions) 6-5 on penalties. David Harvey (keeper for Leeds) missed the 6th penalty shot, and Ian Callaghan stepped up to kick the winner into the back of the net (past Harvey!).

The Leeds manager on that day was the newly appointed Brian Clough, and Liverpool were led out for the last time by Bill Shankly (this was the last trophy won by Bill Shankley as Reds Manager).
4. Was it Peter Shilton who was beaten, by Pat Jenning's long 90 yard kick in the 1967 Charity Shield?

Answer: no

It was Alex Stepney who was beaten. Manchester United drew 3-3 with Tottenham Hotspur, and the Shield was shared. A memorable match, but even more so for the commentator's reaction (Kenneth Wolstenholme): "Oooh! Yes ... a mag ... nificent effort! Eight minutes ... gone and ... Jennings has scored for ... Tottenham!"
5. Which Liverpool player was sent off in the 1974 game?

Answer: Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan was sent off along with Billy Bremner (Leeds United) for fighting. They were the first and second British players sent off at Wembley.
