Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1970
Answer: Chelsea
The 1970 FA Cup final was played on Saturday 11 April at Wembley Stadium in London. Leeds United met Chelsea, who had finished second and third respectively in the top league division that season. The match finished 2-2 after extra time, and so a replay was held on Wednesday 29 April at Old Trafford in Manchester. Chelsea won the replay 2-1 (again after extra time). Due to the state of the Wembley pitch, the replay was held at Old Trafford, the only time between 1923 and 2000 that a final was played at a stadium other than Wembley.
2. 1971
Answer: Arsenal
The 1971 FA Cup final was played on 8 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Arsenal completed their first ever league and cup double with a 2-1 victory after extra time against Liverpool. There is some dispute over the scorer of Arsenal's first goal, with the official records showing that substitute Eddie Kelly had scored, the first substitute to score in an FA Cup final.
However, George Graham had swung a leg at the ball, and while replays appeared to show that he had missed, some still argue that Graham did in fact get the final touch.
3. 1972
Answer: Leeds United
The 1972 FA Cup final was played on 6 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Leeds United defeated the defending titleholders Arsenal 1-0, to claim their first ever FA Cup win.
4. 1973
Answer: Sunderland
The 1973 FA Cup final was played on 5 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Leeds United, holders of the cup and one of the most successful English teams in the late 1960s and early 1970s, were heavy favourites to meet Sunderland, playing in the second-tier of the league. Sunderland managed to pull off one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history with a 1-0 victory, becoming the first team from the second-tier to win the cup since West Bromwich Albion in 1931.
The Sunderland team were the only winners in the 20th century not to field any players who had won a full international cap.
5. 1974
Answer: Liverpool
Newcastle United were appearing in a then record 11th FA Cup final, having won six of their previous 10 matches. Liverpool, however, won the match 3-0 to claim their second FA Cup. The final was played on 4 May at Wembley Stadium in London.
6. 1975
Answer: West Ham United
The 1975 FA Cup final was played on 3 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Fulham, playing in their first ever FA Cup final, were beaten 2-0 by fellow London side West Ham United. This was the last time a team won the FA Cup fielding an all-English team.
7. 1976
Answer: Southampton
The 1976 FA Cup final was played on 1 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Similarly to the 1973 final, Manchester United, who had finished third in the old First Division, were heavy favourites to win against Southampton, who had finished sixth in the old Second Division. Like 1973, it was the underdogs who won, 1-0. This was Southampton's first major trophy.
8. 1977
Answer: Manchester United
The 1977 FA Cup final was played on 21 May at Wembley Stadium in London. Liverpool were aiming to become the first club to win the treble of league, European Cup and FA Cup, having already the league title and winning the European Cup four days later.
However, it was Manchester United who won the game, 2-1. In a twist of fate, it would be United who would become the first team to win the treble, 22 years later in 1999.
9. 1978
Answer: Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town , playing in their first ever FA Cup final, defeated Arsenal 1-0. To prove that this was no fluke, Ipswich finished league-runners up in 1981 and 1982, and won the UEFA Cup in 1981. Their manager, Bobby Robson, would later go on to manage England, taking them to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990. The final was played on 6 May at Wembley Stadium in London.
10. 1979
Answer: Arsenal
The 1979 FA Cup final was played on 12 May at Wembley Stadium in London. In what had been a fairly unremarkable final, Arsenal led Manchester United 2-0 with five minutes left to play. United scored two goals to level the scores, before Alan Sunderland scored the winner for Arsenal in the 89th minute. This was the fifth time Arsenal had won the FA Cup.
