Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which University of Texas and Houston Oilers running back was known in the 80s for his powerful style and ability to break tackles?

Answer: Earl Campbell

Earl Campbell was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1991 after an amazing career with the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints. The "Tyler Rose" was a beast to tackle with his aggressive running style and strong legs. He won college football's Heisman Trophy after an illustrious career at the University of Texas.
2. Number 52 for the Baltimore Ravens, which middle linebacker played 17 seasons for one team and won two Defensive Player Of The Year trophies?

Answer: Ray Lewis

Ray Lewis played college ball at the University of Miami. The former Hurricane was voted to 13 Pro Bowls in his NFL career and Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and 2003. The winner of the Super Bowl MVP in 2000 retired in 2013 and joined ESPN on their broadcast team.
3. At QB, Brett Favre played the game with the enthusiasm of a teenager and the spirit of a warrior. While most of his 20-year career was spent with the Green Bay Packers, which NFL team drafted Brett in 1991?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

While Brett did end his career having played one season for the Jets and his last three years with the Vikings, he was originally drafted by Atlanta in 1991. The Falcons head coach, Jerry Glanville, wasn't a fan of the Southern Mississippi QB and infamously traded his second round pick to Green Bay in 1991.
4. "The Minister of Defense", what former Philadelphia Eagle and Green Bay Packer defensive lineman was voted onto the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team?

Answer: Reggie White

Reggie White took an unusual path to the NFL. After playing college football at the University of Tennessee, Reggie spent two seasons in the now-defunct USFL before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. He led the Green Bay Packers to victory in Super Bowl XXXI and retired in 2000 with 198 career sacks. Reggie was an ordained minister in Tennessee, hence his nickname of "The Minister of Defense".
5. Lester Hayes was an ultimate shutdown cornerback for the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s. Nicknamed "The Judge", Lester was known for his overly aggressive style and his use of what substance on his hands that made it easier to intercept the ball?

Answer: Stickum

After intercepting 13 passes in 1980, Lester was named Defensive Player of the Year. He added five more picks in the playoffs as the Raiders won Super Bowl XV. His legendary performance amazed the fans but also caught the NFL's attention as they banned the use of stickum, a sticky adhesive gunk that players applied to their hands and uniform, for every season starting in 1981.
6. Wide Receiver, Jerry Rice, was named in 2010 as the greatest NFL player of all-time by the NFL Network. Who ranked second on their list?

Answer: Jim Brown

Running Back, Jim Brown, ended his Hall of Fame career with the Cleveland Browns in the prime of his success. The Syracuse graduate and multi-sport athlete was chosen #2 by the NFL Network as the greatest player in NFL history. Jerry Rice ended his NFL career holding virtually all of the major records for a wide receiver.

In 2016, after ten years out of the league, Jerry's records continued to dwarf his nearest rival in total receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns.
7. In just his first six years, Rob Gronkowski created match-up problems when he lined up at tight end for the New England Patriots. What college did Gronkowski attend prior to being drafted into the NFL?

Answer: Arizona

"Gronk" was an absolute steal in the draft for the New England Patriots in the second round in 2010. Gronkowski was injured in 2009 and didn't play during his junior season for the Arizona Wildcats. The Patriots had to take a chance that Rob's amazing sophomore year in college would translate to the NFL. In just his first six seasons, Rob was named First Team All-Pro four times.
8. In 1973, the Oakland Raiders took Ray Guy with the 23rd pick in the first round. This unprecedented move was the first time a player at what position was selected in the first round?

Answer: Punter

Arguably the greatest punter of all-time in the NFL, Ray Guy was the first punter to ever be chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft. In 2014, he was also the first pure punter to ever be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. In 2000, college football announced they would award a trophy to the best punter in the NCAA each year and named the award after Ray Guy.
9. One of the greatest ball hawks in NFL history, Ed Reed retired in 2013 with 64 interceptions, a Super Bowl trophy, and nine Pro Bowl appearances. What position did this former Miami Hurricane and Baltimore Raven play in college and the NFL?

Answer: Safety

Ed Reed helped Miami win the NCAA Football Championship in 2001 before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the NFL Draft. In 2004, Ed was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year and led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2012.

He was the first player to ever return an interception, fumble recovery, punt block, and punt return for touchdowns in NFL history.
10. One of the most electrifying and elusive running backs of all-time was Barry Sanders. Which of these facts about the Detroit Lions running back is NOT true?

Answer: He's never appeared on the Madden video game cover

Barry Sanders left college holding the all-time single season rushing record with 2,628 total yards. His NFL career, while illustrious in terms of individual achievements, was marred by the fact that the 5'8" running back never made it to the Super Bowl. Like fellow running back, Jim Brown, Sanders retired while still in the prime of his career, just one good season away from setting the NFL standard for most career rushing yards. Barry was the first NFL player to be on the cover of the Madden video game twice! He was the cover athlete in 2000 and chosen to be on the cover for the special Madden 25 game in 2013.
