Signed on a massive retainer, Piquet qualified second at Jacarapagua and after a first-lap incident eliminated teammate Nigel Mansell and slowed up Ayrton Senna, Piquet set fastest lap and won the race comfortably.

Senna and Mansell were in a class of their own at Jerez, while as usual there were plenty of retirements. Alain Prost did his usual trick of surviving the carnage to finish third, with teammate Rosberg fourth.

Johnny Dumfries retired on lap 8 with wheel bearing failure with teammate Senna retiring three laps later with the same problem.

Both Minardis and both Osellas failed to qualify, no surprise there. Dumfries in his Lotus also failed to qualify along with Huub Rothergatter in his Zakspeed. Both Haas Lolas made the grid, Patrick Tambay qualifying a sensational 8th and Alan Jones in 18th out of 20 cars.

The death of the popular de Angelis cast a huge shadow over the paddock at the Belgian Grand Prix. De Angelis had been testing when a rear-wing failure sent his Brabham cart-wheeling down the circuit, eventually vaulting the guardrail and coming to rest upside-down. Sadly, Elio died in hospital the next day from massive internal injuries and significant brain damage.

Piquet led the first 16 laps of the race before the pitstops. Senna then led for five laps before Johansson took the lead, but Mansell was soon past the Swede and won easily from Senna and Johansson.

Mansell led nearly the entire race and only lost the lead during the pitstops, first time to Rosberg and the second to Prost.

Qualifying in sixth (teammate Rene Arnoux 4th), Laffite slowly worked his way to the front, and after teammate Arnoux led three laps, Laffite took the lead for 13 laps before being overtaken by Piquet. Laffite eventually finished second to Senna.

Nigel Mansell won a jam-packed British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch that saw a startline accident (which ended with Laffite suffering broken legs), a re-start and then a titanic battle between Mansell and Piquet, the Englishmen winning out in the end. Jonathan Palmer in the Zakspeed was the final finisher, 6 laps down.

Qualifying on pole position, Rosberg had his best race of the season so far, duelling with nearly everyone on the grid at one stage. The Finn was looking good for at least second place after losing the lead on lap 38 but ran out of fuel on the final lap, dropping to 5th.

Senna took pole position, and he and Piquet were involved in a race-long scrap for the win, Piquet passing Senna on the outside of turn one on lap 57 to take the victory.

No surprise to see the Benetton-BMW on pole a power circuit like the Osterreichring, with teammate Gerhard Berger also on the front row. But it all went wrong for the team during the race, Fabi retiring on lap 17 with a blown engine while Berger finished 3 laps down in 7th after battery problems.

Prost managing to put his McLaren-Porsche second, next to Teo Fabi, and ahead of the likes of Berger, Mansell and Piquet, which was quite a surprise on this horsepower circuit. However, it all went pear-shaped for both front-row cars as both stalled their cars - Prost was later disqualified for changing cars too late.

Williams-Honda, Ligier-Renault, Arrows-Megatron and Minardi-Motori Moderni had both cars make it to the chequered flag. Only one team - Haas Lola - had both cars retire.

Mansell was looking set for his first world championship, sitting in fourth place behind Alain Prost but that would have been sufficient to take the title. That tyre blow-out changed everything, as Piquet pitted for new rubber and Alain Prost was left to win the race and the title.
