Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2005, the rules stated that teams were not allowed to change _____ during a grand prix?

Answer: tyres

The rules of 2005 stated that each of the ten teams taking part were not allowed to change the tyres during a grand prix no matter how worn they became. The only way drivers were allowed to change was if they had to switch tyre types (Dry, Intermediate & Wet). Alonso became a victim of this rule at Monaco where his tyres were worn away so badly he had virtually no grip left.
2. In 2007, when was it legal to pit under a safety car?

Answer: After the cars have lined up in correct race order

When the safety car came out in 2007, drivers could only pit after all cars were on the same lap behind the safety car. The back markers had to 'unlap' themselves before the pit lane was open.
3. Which two drivers were disqualified in the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix for ignoring the red light in the pit lane?

Answer: Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella

Massa and 'Fisico' were disqualified for ignoring the red light in the pit lane that prevented them from getting back onto the track after completing their pit stops. This was to stop them leaving the pits in front of the safety car. Alonso and Rosberg were penalised with a 10 second stop-go penalty for pitting under the safety car.

But they had no choice, after the race, both quoted that they were running out of fuel!
4. Bridgestone was the sole tyre supplier in F1 for 2007, but what was the rule regarding harder and softer tyres?

Answer: Both compounds had to be used in the race

2007 rules stated that both harder and softer compounds were to be used in the race at some point. During qualifying or practice, teams could use any compound any time.
5. For part of 2005 there were two qualifying sessions, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. After how many races was this scrapped?

Answer: Six

After the Monaco GP 2005, the qualifying rules changed to only one session on Saturday, and drivers were allowed one flying lap.
6. Which of these F1 features were banned in 2004?

Answer: All of them

All of these features that had been used before in F1 were banned in 2004. Gearboxes had to be manual, no pit-to-car telemetry and launch control was disabled.
7. How many qualifying sessions were there originally called for in 2006?

Answer: Three

Two 15 minute sessions were to take place on Saturday afternoon followed by a 20 minute final shootout session. The last six grid slots would be decided as six cars would be eliminated from qualifying. Same again for the second session. The third would be for 20 minutes and 10 drivers would go out and do as many laps as they wish.

The fastest would obviously start from pole position. The third 20 minute session would later be changed mid-season to just 15 minutes as the FIA decided that 20 minutes was too long.
8. Who was disqualified at the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix, for failure to obey rules and regulations?

Answer: Juan Pablo Montoya

Montoya was exiting the pits and failed to acknowledge the red light at the end of the pit lane. Both Massa and Fisichella did the same thing at the same Grand Prix in 2007.
9. If any number of drivers sets identical lap times, who would priority be given to?

Answer: The driver who set it first

If one driver completes a lap in qualifying, practice or the race, then another driver sets an identical time. The driver who set it first would be given priority.
10. Blocking another driver on track is illegal. Which of these events never occurred?

Answer: Alonso blocked Raikkonen at Brazil 2005

Alonso never blocked Kimi in Brazil. Schumi parked up at Rascasse in qualifying for the '06 Monaco GP and at the end was demoted 21 places and started from the back. Alonso blocked Hamilton in qualifying for the '07 Hungarian GP and was demoted five places and started from sixth. Coulthard did block Heikki Kovalainen at the start of Q3 in qualifying for the '07 Monaco GP, but unlike the other incidents, this one was accidental; Coulthard never saw Heikki behind him. Coulthard was demoted out of the top 10 shoot out.
