Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although Club Celaya disappeared in 2003, which team from Morelos was sold on that same year so that Celaya could keep their soccer team?

Answer: La Piedad

The team was founded in 1954 by Miguel Iriarte Montes, in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato. Although it started in lower divisions, it remained quite some time in the First Division until, in 2002, they had several economic problems, which led to their disappearance. Finally, it returned to the city of Celaya through the sale of La Piedad.
Between 2011 and 2020, the team played in Ascenso MX, the tournament that determined which team was promoted to the Mexican First Division.
2. In 1999, which team from a state of the same name bought Union de Curtidores, from Guanajuato, to remain in the Mexican First Division?

Answer: Puebla

Puebla FC, which was founded in 1944, was relegated in the Verano 1999 tournament. However, the just promoted Union de Curtidores team was bought by Puebla, players switched squads and that way Puebla got another year in the premier division.
3. In 2001, Irapuato, team which had just been promoted, moved to Veracruz. However, as a First Division team already existed in Veracruz, they had to move to another city. Which city, known for its jungles, was this?

Answer: Chiapas

The franchise of Irapuato went to Veracruz, but as the team Tiburones Rojos (Red Sharks) already represented Veracruz, the owners decided to change it to Chiapas.

The team had to play its first home game in the "Estadio Azul", as their stadium, "Victor Manuel Reyna", was not yet ready.
4. In 2001, La Piedad had just been promoted to the First Division, but another team bought their place in the tournament, and kept the franchise. Which team did this?

Answer: Queretaro

The Mexican League had been expanded from 18 to 20 teams, but the FMF (Mexican Football Federation) changed its decision and returned the format to 18 teams, which disappeared the recently acquired franchise of La Piedad/Queretaro.
5. Necaxa is a historic team in Mexican soccer. The team played in Mexico City for many years before switching to which city? (Hint: it means "hot waters" if literally translated to English)

Answer: Aguascalientes

Necaxa was founded by a group of Mexican electricians in 1923, and after 80 years in Mexico City, the team, which by then had won many championships, decided to change to Aguascalientes due to the lack of fans in the capital city.

Sadly, and even though certain identity was given both to the city and to the team after the switch, Necaxa didn't have good tournaments and it was relegated in 2009.
6. In 2007, Atlante switched to a Mexican city known for its beaches, and apparently the change was good. They won the League Championship in their first season there. Which city, located in the state of Quintana Roo, was chosen as the new venue for Atlante in 2007?

Answer: Cancun

Atlante had been struggling with low attendance in their stadiums throughout history (they played in more than four stadiums), so they decided to change to Cancun. They won the Apertura 2007 championship, this tournament being the first to ever be played in Cancun by Atlante.

Unfortunately, the situation got worse, and the team slowly entered relegation issues. In 2014, the team was relegated to the "Ascenso MX" league.
7. Club Santos Laguna played their home games in Estadio Corona from 1983 until 2009, when a new stadium was built. What is the name of the new sports complex that became the team's new home?

Answer: Territorio Santos Modelo

The New Corona Stadium was inaugurated as part of the complex Territorio Santos Modelo in 2009, by then President of Mexico Felipe Calderon, and FIFA President Joseph Blatter.

Ciudad Universitaria is the sports complex where the team Pumas plays, while Ciudad Cooperativa is home for the younger teams of Cruz Azul.
8. Shortly after the 2012-13 season ended, the relegated team bought the Jaguares de Chiapas franchise in order to retain its First Division status. Which team was the relegated team?

Answer: Queretaro

The Jaguares de Chiapas franchise was sold to Grupo Delfines, which decided that the team should take the place of Queretaro. Many of the players at Chiapas moved to play in the city of Queretaro.

In 2014, the Mexican government found Grupo Delfines owner Amado Yañez guilty of fraud, which ended in his arrest. The players and workers of Queretaro spent more than three months without being paid.
9. In 2013, after Jaguares de Chiapas was sold, the local government tried to keep soccer in Chiapas. The team formerly known as Club San Luis changed its venue, making Chiapas its new home. Which Mexican television magnate owned San Luis for years before this change happened?

Answer: Televisa

Grupo Televisa at one point owned three teams: Club America, Club Necaxa and Club San Luis. Due to new rules, they could only own one team, so this was the perfect opportunity to get rid of the not-so-important teams. Televisa only owns Club America now.

Many of the residents of San Luis protested the change, as the city was left without First Division football.
10. Season 2012-13 season saw La Piedad become the Ascenso champion, and promoted to the First Division. However, to which city did the team move right after being promoted?

Answer: Veracruz

La Piedad's stadium did not comply with the League's regulations, which forced them to change cities, and they chose Veracruz, which has a long history of soccer. The La Piedad franchise was reborn in the Mexican Second Division.
